A Non-Philosophical Theory of Nature: Ecologies of Thought (Radical Theologies), by A. Smith

Utilizing Franois Laruelle's "non-philosophical" method, Smith constructs a unified theory of philosophical theology and ecology by challenging environmental philosophy and theology, claiming that and engagement with scientific ecology can radically change the standard metaphysics of nature, as well as ethical problems related to "the natural".

Review

'Ecology is often the object of overly simple and inadequate philosophies; the revision of our naturalist and philosophical concepts should, however, go together. This is the aim of Anthony Paul Smith's investigation which makes use of the 'non-philosophical' hypothesis so as to bring these new relations between nature and thought up to date. A great book that masterfully takes these problems head on, theology among them, and renews the analysis and significance of ecology.' - Franois Laruelle, Professor Emeritus, Contemporary Philosophy, University of Paris X: Ouest-Nanterre-La Dfense, France

"The scientific study of nature is more complex than simple ecological epigrams would indicate; on the other hand, philosophy is more arduous than many scientists concede. Anthony Paul Smith inhabits both fields authentically and this important work shows the fruit of his interdisciplinary labors. We will be discussing the central theses of this pathfinding book for many decades.' - Liam Heneghan, Professor, Environmental Science, Co-Director, the Institute for Nature and Culture, DePaul University, USA

'In this highly-original book, Anthony Paul Smith sketches the contours of a new discipline: ecological thinking - not simply an ecological metaphysics but a metaphysics formed through thinking ecologically. Constructing a dialogue between Francois Laruelle, philosophical theology, and scientific ecology, he enables these ways of thinking to invade each other and cohabit together. Ground-breaking and timely, this book sets the cutting edge for contemporary thinking.' - Philip Goodchild, Professor, Religion and Philosophy, University of Nottingham, UK

Groundbreaking Theory of Nature
By Christine M. Skolnik
*A Non-Philosophical Theory of Nature* is a groundbreaking contribution to environmental ethics. Anthony Paul Smith's vision will certainly inform academic philosophy and theology, and (with any luck) wake environmental ethics at large from its dogmatic slumber. Though this is a scholarly book written for academics, its relevance is hard to circumscribe. It informs all our relations.

Some academics may turn away from the theological scaffolding of Smith's theory. Others may find his simultaneous engagement of philosophy, theology, and ecology presumptuous. But the earnest reader will quickly understand that this remarkable work could not have emerged from any single discipline.

By way of brief summary, Smith combines Francois Laruelle's non-philosophy with ecological principles to reinvent environmental ethics. He illuminates the vexed relationship between philosophy and science (also with deference to Laruelle). He redefines community and the condition of human beings within ecological communities. And he refashions various spiritual topoi including creation and suffering. Though sometimes defensive, *A Non-Philosophial Theory of Nature* is ultimately a mark of creaturely courage and a labor of love. The result is a scholarly and highly original work.

While experts in any number of disciplines or sub-disciplines may find fault in Smith's reading of this philosopher or that theologian (such is the price of interdisciplinary work and the way of the academic world), those sincerely interested in Smith's theoretical creation will find much of interest and use. Ambitious and exact, historically conscious and prescient, heretical and reverent, perverse and pure, impudent and inspired . . . and that's just the front cover.
