Not For Every Audience

Obviously a number of reviewers have been helped by this book. It contains a lot of valuable information, including often-overlooked points such as evaluating and adapting to teachers' varying styles.

That said, I agreed with the reviewer who pointed out that most students who can navigate this book and "read and reread it many times" as the author recommends don't really need a book of this sort. Those who cannot do so may find this book no easier to comprehend than their school assignments. On page 70, for example, the author gives this suggestion:

"As you read, think of ways to organize the material to help your mind absorb it."

That one skill alone takes many students years to master. He follows this suggestion with:

"I always liked diagrams with single words and short phrases connected with arrows to show cause-and-effect relationships."

Again, a student who understands cause-and-effect relationships and can visualize the kind of diagram the author describes is already ahead of the game. Those who can't won't be helped by this suggestion.

The book uses a linear format of most of the suggestions given. Details and charts are given for creating task sheets, charting one's use of time, making a schedule, or writing an outline. But there are no instructions or illustrations for the use of graphic organizers, for example, which are helpful for visual learners in understanding text or plotting a writing assignment. Many more visual examples could have been provided that would make the text more useful. Struggling learners need information presented in more than one modality. Color would help. Not overly-busy, which is also problematic, but something to relieve the many pages of dense black and white and text, give visual clues to help readers find information quickly.

The book's index is not comprehensive enough. While reading, I came across several subtopics I wanted to go back to, but could not find in the index.

The author states that this book is for high school students, middle school students, "traditional" college students, parents of students of any age, and "nontraditional" students. Writing one book to fit the needs of each of these audiences would be a tall order. And indeed, as I peruse the book with each of these target groups in mind, there is much that any one of them would need to wade through or skip over. That is an unnecessary burden for someone who is already struggling with study skills; each of these groups deserves a book that is targeted toward their needs. The average middle schooler preparing for high school would find this book inaccessible.

In all, this book contains a lot of good information, but in a format that is less than user-friendly, and should be divided into several separate books and revised to meet the needs of learners of different ages and abilities.

Best Study BooK Ever!

I first fell in love with this book about 15 years ago when I started my undergraduate program. I don't remember which edition it was back then (probably the first) but it made a difference in my study habits. As a PhD student, mother, and wife, I felt that it would be essential to improve my study habits as I am returning to school. This author has a real insight into the lives of real students. He offer practical ways of how to study by identifying who you are and what you need to do for you. I think this is a must have for any student...traditional or non-traditional. If you want to learn how to study, this is the way to do it.

great for students of any age

I have a teenager that I am trying to get "in the groove" of studying. The breezy, "tell it like it is" approach to schoolwork is refreshing and encouraging for the struggling student. Too often, kids think the difference between "smart kids", "average kids" and "dumb kids" is a product of "inborn talent" or smart parents. The real difference between students is HOW they Study. This book tells you how to become an excellent student.

I am returning to college for some post graduate work and find the tips very worthwhile. I am getting straight A's. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Good Read, Engaging Characters

This was a pleasant surprise. It was well written, very descriptive, and seemed like it was going to be your typical vampire/werewolf book that I have read a thousand times before: girl meets new world and conquers it with minimal effort; has the ability and skills to kick everyone's butt and master everything she encounters without any training, falls in love with the sexy mysterious stranger that has to have her, and they live happily ever after. Well, that definitely didn't happen in this book, and it was a nice change of pace. Skyler (not my favorite name) fumbled in the beginning, and just when I was beginning to get annoyed with her, she began to get tougher, smarter, and more likable. Her witty, sassy sense of humor made me laugh and her comical observations were a well needed relief to her bad situation.

The characters were dark, but likable. I wasn't sure who to trust, and throughout the book I kept wondering who the good and bad guys/women were, and I loved that! I hate a generic/predictable story. I liked the chemistry between Skyler, Josh, and his brother Ethan. I couldn't decide which one I would rather have her end up with. I went back and forth a few times trying to decide if I wanted her to end up with the sexy witch or the ruthless wolf with questionable ethics.

Most books, I can predict what will happen and they usually have a stock happy ending. Moon Tortured didn't give you that, but it offered a very satisfying read with an unexpected ending that left me wanting the next book to be available. And that's the point of a good series. It should leave you wanting more. I'm curious to find out what is next for Skyler. She's a werewolf that can do magic (which makes for a more multideminsional character, andI haven't seen that in many of the other werewolf books I have read) and is no longer under the radar of a pack that wants her as a member.

Even if you like a tidy story that can be wrapped up in a single book, I suggest you give this a try. As I said, it was a nice change of pace. It was a good read and I plan to follow this series.

Average Series Starter for Urban Fantasy Fans

When I read the first book in a new series, I’m primarily looking for one thing: does this book make me want to read the next one? In the case of Moon Tortured, I would have to say that it did; however, the journey to that point was a rough one. This urban fantasy includes the familiar players in the genre: werewolves/were-animals, vampires, warlocks, and mentions of the fae, elves, etc. Definitely in the paranormal world here.

Skylar Brooks is a werewolf and something else that becomes the central point of the story. She doesn’t know what she is and neither does anyone else. And that little extra bit has put her in the protection of a were-animal pack.

I struggled with the first 20% of the book. Between the blatant character description dumps and lack of world information I felt like I was too immersed. It was clear we were in an alternate modern world but the descriptions focused on the characters and less-so on everything around them. As the story progressed, the protagonist, Skylar, was left in the dark by the rest of the cast because she “couldn’t know” what was going on. While this partially fit the story, it also seemed to become and excuse for her to be ignorant of the situation and create a sense of mystery. Instead of hooking me, I became annoyed as it continued like this for quite some time.

Despite the beginning third of the book, I eventually got into the story. I really wasn’t a fan of Skylar and her reckless decisions that kept putting her in danger. In fact, of the entire cast, I think my favorite character was Winter. Part of the Midwest Pack protecting her, Winter had the least amount of backstory given (except maybe Gavin) yet they both became two of my favorite characters in the book. She wasn’t helpless and her attitude toward Skylar held a lot of sense. Gavin is just interesting because he comes out of nowhere and you don’t know anything about him (which is at odds with this book because you’re given info on most of the characters). That made him stand out against the rest.

I also wasn’t a big fan of Ethan, one of the other main players. You can see how this can be a problem when I care more about side characters than protagonists. He held a constant animosity toward Skylar that went from being alright to just annoying when there was really no cause. Ethan became one-dimensional with anger and irritation as his calling cards. His brother, Josh, had more going for him with a lust for magic and a personality that was all over the place. Not sure how I feel about him, to be honest.

This book is almost entirely character-driven, circling around the decisions they make and the consequences that come from them. As someone who prefers a decent amount of world-building along with character development, this book wasn’t entirely suited to my personal reading tastes. Overall, I wouldn’t consider this a standout book in the genre but I enjoyed it by the end. While I’m not desperately grabbing for the sequel, I would certainly read it and may do so in the future. Moon Tortured holds potential as a series but I would consider this an average starter perfect for fans looking for a new urban fantasy series.

Shoved into a life she'd been trying to hide from, surrounded by brutal killers. What could go wrong?

I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I bought this book. I enjoy a good paranormal book and thought like this sounded like an interesting book.

The story revolves around Sky who we are introduced to and find that she a young, peaceful woman, struggling with her identity, and trying to enjoy life with her adopted mother.

An attack with tragic consequences sends Skylar into the wolf's den, literary. A place that she doesn't want to be and surrounded by something that she has spent her entire life hiding from.

Skylar, rightly so, is scared and trying to figure out why she is surrounded by these extremely violent people whom she just watched brutally kill people. She doesn't trust them and wonders if she will be the next casualty. They say she's not a prisoner but yet she cannot leave, well she can but when she does bad things happen.

Through time she understands that while they really are protecting her she still wonders why. They are not willing to share details and some of it they do not even know.

In steps the magic wielder that seemingly holds the keys to information and her safety. Together, along with her minders, they embark on a journey to discover why Skylar is marked for death by the entire paranormal community and being hunted by a powerful Vampire in search of the ultimate gift.

There were many times I was annoyed with Skylar as she seems to spend most of the book stuck in the same mental loop even when evidence clearly point to the opposite. She has a strong moral compass and holds onto it with a death grip through the carnage that seems to follow her like a shadow.

I really kept waiting for her to come into her own and there were sparks occasionally only to see her basically regress back at the end, although she does grow in some respects. I guess we will need to read the rest of the series to she where life takes Skylar.

I enjoyed the book and if you're a fan of paranormal books then I think you'll enjoy this book and series.

Wonderfully Insightful

I think that the spinor formalism is very important and will be central to important advances in the physics of the future. Certainly Penrose and Rindler's book is very good and beyond criticism by someone like me. However often I see the spinor formalism explained, I find it unsatisfactory. I end up wondering what it all really means, why it is as it is. Without a satisfactory intuition about the formalism, it is not possible for me to get decent results in my own research. This book is not the standard presentation, and I suppose there may be some formalists in the audience who might not like it so much. For me, it gives very good and satisfactory explanations not just of the formalism but of its deeper meaning. It helps to form an intuition that would otherwise be achieved only after a very long time and with some frustration. This is a kinder and gentler way to get the question answered, "What does it really mean? What is it really all about?" Moving beyond the spinor formalism, the author discusses its substantial relation to quantum mechanics. While his conclusions may not gain universal acceptance immediately, it is a very, very useful step in getting more understanding of the quantum theory. It is a great testimony to the French system. It has the vigor and insight to support this kind of work. The French are great in mathematics at every generation. It is a testimony to the Imperial College Press that they would publish an unusual but insightful book. The author has, indeed, made this subject as simple as possible without over-simplification. I just love this book.

About the Author
Anita Woolfolk Hoy received her BA Magna Cum Laude in 1969 from the University of Texas at Austin, with a major in Psychology and a minor in Chemistry. In 1972 she was awarded a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the same university. From 1973 to 1993 she was on the faculty of the Department of Educational Psychology (Chair 1990-1993) of the Graduate School of Education, Rutgers University. Currently she is a Professor in the College of Education, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Her professional offices include Vice-President for Division K (Teaching & Teacher Education) of the American Educational Research Association and President of Division 15 (Educational Psychology) of the American Psychological Association. Currently, she is editor of Theory Into Practice, a journal that provides multiple perspectives and scholarly discussions of issues that concern educators. Professor Woolfolk Hoy has published research in the areas of teacher cognition, student perceptions of teachers, teachers’ beliefs, student motivation, and the application of educational psychology to teaching. Her work appears in the Journal of Educational Psychology, American Educational Research Journal, Review of Research in Education, Teaching and Teacher Education, the Elementary School Journal, Action in Teacher Education, Teachers College Record, Educational Researcher, and the Educational Psychologist. Her text, Educational Psychology (Allyn and Bacon), is in its 10th edition and is the most widely read introduction to educational psychology in the field. She is married to Wayne K. Hoy, the Novice Fawcett Chair in Educational Administration at The Ohio State University. Together have completed the 3rd edition of  Instructional Leadership: A Research-Based Guide to Learning in Schools (Allyn & Bacon) and  conduct research on teacher and school efficacy. They have three children:  Wayne, President of Advanced Software Products; Kelly, a teacher  at The Phillips Brooks School in Menlo Park, CA; and Liz, a student in Columbus, OH. Their insights about education are frequently volunteered and greatly appreciated.

justifiably a first choice in ed psych texts

Educational psychology is a field in which there has been an explosion of research (and of theories) in the past 30 years, and a matching proliferation of educational fads and products that are being marketed to school systems every day as the fix for one problem or another. Dr. Woolfolk Hoy brings order to this cacophony, highlighting the theories that seem to do the best job of explaining how students (and teachers) think and behave, and emphasizing what has actually worked in classrooms. Probably the author, in light of her prodigious experience and deserved authority, could be even more selective in what work she chooses to mention, but sorting through the stacks of journal articles is a huge endeavor, and I give Dr. W-H full marks for her conscientiousness and fairness. She does not run with the fads, but gives her critical evaluation of the research on both sides.

Very thorough

Who knew an 11 pound book could tell me so much about a 6 ounce map? With the exception of up to the minute GIS advances, this book is the most thorough on map use I've encountered.
