From the Author
At PowerPivotPro, I have really enjoyed working with the Power Pivot and Power BI community. This book, with Rob Collie, was an effort to reach out and help an even greater audience. Little did I know what I was signing up for :-)

It was hard juggling book writing with the training/consulting/travel. But I am glad we persevered. Big thanks to our IndieGoGo crowdfunding supporters, who not only made it possible to print this book in full-gorgeous color, but also inspired us to burn the night oil in writing those last chapters.

I sincerely believe that Power Pivot and Power BI can transform the lives of Excel users worldwide - after all I was one of them. But change is hard, even when it's for the better. We hope we can help you go from Excel to Power BI with this book and our services at PowerPivotPro.

Power On!

From the Back Cover
Power Pivot for Excel and its close cousin Power BI Desktop are Microsoft's tightly-related pair of revolutionary analytical tools - tools that are fundamentally changing the way organizations work with data. We have repeatedly witnessed the "Power tools" transformative impact on the bottom line - far more robust and elegant than Excel alone, and much more agile and affordable than traditional BI tools. Their shared state of the art calculation engines (DAX and M) turn any PC into an analytical supercomputer, but the real secret is people - these tools are 100% learnable by today's users of Excel. The data revolution lays not in the hands of an elite few, but in YOUR hands, and we want to help you seize that opportunity.

Are you good at Excel
By Mr Brian Mather
Are you good at Excel? Have you tried Power”etc.”, subscribed to blogs, bounced around the web learning bits here and there? Do you suspect that this PowerPivot/PowerBI thing is a game changer but not sure how to get started?
I tell you what. Everything you’ve seen or learned up until now has been useful.
This book from PowerPivotPro will simply untangle it and line it all up in nice neat strands with a tasty sauce of fresh knowledge. Dig in!
This truly is a crafted masterpiece. Yeah, I know. An excel book, really? It’s both entertaining and insightful, full of context and personal story. Each new concept is introduced a carefully orchestrated way that makes the content extraordinarily accessible.
So which version of the tools does it cover? The eclectic evolution of convention and function between the toolsets in Excel 2010, 2013, 2016 and PowerDesktop are dealt with crisp simplicity. You can simply get started with the version you have available to you with confidence. No more waiting until the tools you have access to feel like the ‘right’ version.
Hats off to you lads, and thank you!

"Even perfection has room for improvement." is now proven.
By HJN
Wow! I have had the first edition of this book since soon after it was released in 2012 and it has been my PowerPivot bible. I have other PowerPivot books that were purchased back in 2012. I am not sure where they are at or what the titles were. The dog might have eaten one of them, but I didn't care. Once I had this book, I didn't need anything else. I have since bought close to a dozen copies for members of my team. I was well aware a second edition was being released. I didn't expect a big difference between the editions, perhaps a few new bells and whistles, but not anything that would change fundamentals. I have a number pre-ordered on Amazon and purchased 4 through their crowd funding event for an ever growing pool of users. I received one of those copies last week and was floored with the dramatic improvements. It was well worth the wait. The color graphics with a plethora of annotation makes a big impact. It is laid out in a logical concise format, but it goes well beyond how to instructions. It lays out how and why it works. The added information and what not to do bubbles are a great additions to highlight key information that could have easily gotten lost in the text. Love it!

Great book - highly recommended. Accompanying Excel files not quite as helpful
By E. Hansberry
I have years experience working with Excel pivot tables and using Microsoft Access databases as a backend. I just recently got a copy of Excel 2016 and wanted something to help me get started with PowerPivot and the DAX engine. The UI and terminology is just different enough I didn't want to slog through it myself.

This book has been perfect in that respect. It starts off assuming you have a good working knowledge of things like tables, relationships, pivot tables, and databases in general, and then shows you how to plug the DAX engine into all of that. This is not a book for Excel Pivot Table beginners, but a book for DAX/PowerPivot beginners.

I disagree with some of the reviewers that the book needs an editor. I've personally not found that to be the case. I found the writing style engaging, with complex subjects approached from different angles.

One issue I have with the book, and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, is the content that comes with it. The book has no files or CD inside, but it has a link to a ZIP file on their web site with all sorts examples. The problem is everything is done. So when you open up the workbook for CHAPTER 6, there is nothing to do but look at it. I found myself deleting a bunch of stuff, which is tedious as you cannot bulk-delete Measures in PowerPivot.

As much of the book seems to build not only in concept through each chapter, but also with the data model, I went back and grabbed the CHAPTER 4 workbook. This is where the meat of the book really starts. I am working back through to chapter 9 (my current position in the book) and building the Measures, Calculated Columns, etc. which is a much better learning experience for me instead of just looking at formulas in the book and confirming that those are the same formulas in the finished workbooks.

I would really like to give it better than 4 stars, but since it is a book designed to teach, it should be really good at it. The fully completed examples simply fail to teach.

That said, I wholeheartedly recommend this book. I am glad it was my first choice.
