Governance in Dark Times

Stivers writes wonderfully, weaving philosophies of Arendt, Kant, Foucault, Hobbes, Heidegger, and Dewey into an analysis of important demands currently confronting the public administration. She draws normative principles from our tradition of political ideas to specify a path for reforms to the existing administrative ethos, practices, and institutions. Quite remarkably, her book is comprehensive yet accessible. It covers key historical, empirical, and theoretical points while not glossing over too much detail. Moreover, this book has a literary quality to it--a quality that is most rare among books in public administration. While achieving a practical end, Stivers creates haunting metaphors of light and dark that serve as her book's leitmotif. A worthwhile read, a disappointing experience

First and foremost, chapter 10 should be an Appendix. This was a horrible ending to what seemed to be a promising discussion on horizontal scaling for any system/network engineer or astute systems engineer.

Clear and concise, then incoherent and grammatically challenged, this book requires constant read backs leaving the reader with a sense of a diminished level of reading comprehension.

Fortunately there are some very good real world discussions on horizontal scaling, distributed caching, and eliminating single points of failure in your design.

Unfortunately the book was a long documentary on the author's Spread utility/program/solution and the last chapter is dedicated to writing a module for Spread. Completely out of band with regards to actual high performance clustered environments where the author's solution is likely scarce in popularity.

I do appreciate his coverage of logging. Despite my rating, I don't regret the first nine chapters.

I could not put this book down

I picked up this book the other day on the recommendation of a friend, and I can't put it down. I like it because:

* its small (the number of pages 225, the print, the format, the thickness) , but its pithy. Every page has useful stuff.
* the real world experience (pain!) just oozes out of this book. So many times while reading I thought: "Oh yes ... hadn't thought of that."
* its not stridently opensource, nonetheless ends up most there anyway - but only after addressing commercial products and their role
* its business focused, not geek focused - while still being incredibly geeky

Most of all its just really well written and edited. I've caught a couple of minor typos, but nothing that interfered with reading or enjoying the book.

In a world of many great technical books, and insufficient time to read them, its hard to know which ones are worth the effort. This one definitely is.

The previous reviews don't really do it justice

This is a fantastic book about scalable systems. If you want specifics, he presents opensource and cost effective solutions that can be implemented, but in my opinion that isn't the real value of the book.

The real value is the way he leads you through the thought processess that need to occur as you plan for releasing and using such a system. I really like some of the stuff that is emphasized and has caused me to realize that I had gaps in my knowledge. Gaps like better release planning, and actual cost of such a system, especially as it grows, or shrinks.

I've been extremely happy with this purchase.

I have been waiting for this story for what seems like forever. Toby and Raziel have been big players in this series since the beginning and the author has teased me with the promise of their HEA for too long. However, I have had this one in my possession for some time but have not been able to bring myself to read it. This is for several reasons. The first is that this is the final installment of a series I have loved since the prequel and I am not ready for it to end. The second reason is that I knew this would be an emotional story. Even the blurb itself brought forth a reaction from me. But I could not put this off any longer so I finally broke down and read it.

And I was so right. It was emotional. It was a bit hopeless at first, with poor Tobyy hidden away where the guardian could not sense him. Then it got a bit hopeful with “Raven” making an appearance and the author letting the reader know he was not what he seemed. Then I was happy when “Raven,” who actually turned out to be Rogan (Roman’s father and demi-god) gave Eydan what for and sent him to be eternally punished for his bad behavior. Then things turned to love and my heart soared because Raziel and Toby finally got to be together in real life, not just mentally. Oh I was so ecstatic that they could finally be together after so much suffering. And then came the fear and sadness as Toby did what I knew he would do. He sacrificed himself to save the world. But NO! He and Raziel just met and now Toby was being taken away again. Then there was restrained hope and admiration as the guardians banned together to try to save Toby. And holy s***! Raziel’s true angelic form is revealed and WOW just WOW.

Finally, amazement and happiness returned as Raziel and Toby were saved by Raziel’s father. I cried a bit here as Raziel’s father was so selfless in his love that he made the ultimate sacrifice to save his son and his son’s mate.

This final installment of the Preternatural Rescue Centre series wrapped up the series arc nicely and left things in a great place. I know this series will not be for everyone, but I have loved these men from the very beginning and am so sad to see them go. But while I am going to miss them all, the ending was satisfying and I am looking forward to more of Ms. Cross’s works.

About the Author
As a trial lawyer for 30 years David Weitzman specialized in the defense of individuals arrested for political reasons, or in violation of their civil liberties. He is now retired and wanted to tell the story of one of the world’s champions of liberty and his own personal hero, the Marquis de Lafayette. As an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, and Chairman of ACLU chapters in Northern Virginia and Berkeley, California, Mr. Weitzman was personally involved in trying notable civil liberties cases, representing the late Abbie Hoffman when he was arrested for wearing an American flag shirt, and representing the writer Norman Mailer when he was arrested for demonstrating against the war in Viet Nam at the Pentagon. For over 30 years Mr. Weitzman worked diligently trying to protect the Constitutional Rights of demonstrators, war protestors, garment workers, farm workers, and U.S. Marines.

Living a Life That Matters is a Book That Matters!

David Weitzman's rendering of the Marquis de Lafayette is factual and inspiring to any lover of liberty. His picturesque prose clearly illustrates Gilbert du Motier (the Marquis' other name) in 3-D living color, free of unnecessary stylistic flourishes and might otherwise stand between the reader and this fascinating historical figure who was an American Revolutionary, close friend of General George Washington, and a beloved national hero during the long and tortuous birth of Democracy in France.

Living a Life That Matters is a must-read for any serious student of American history; and indeed, for any American citizen.

Driven by liberty

There are two remarkable things about Living A Life That Matters. It is written in the first person, as autobiography. This gives it a vitality not often seen in third person biographies. It was a gamble by David Weitzman, but he has pulled it off with the aplomb of - a Lafayette. Second and most remarkable is the hero of the tale, Gilbert Motier, Marquis de La Fayette. A more star-studded, eventful life there simply has not been.

In the first half of his life, Lafayette was enormously lucky. He was born into a wealthy family, and married into another. He defied the king by going to America to fight in the revolutionary war, but only got two weeks of house arrest (with a wife he hadn’t seen in years) as “punishment”. He insinuated his way into General George Washington’s heart because he was a fellow Freemason. Only 19, he demanded the rank of major general. He danced on the knife’s edge of the French Revolution, first supporting the king, then having him arrested when he tried to flee. So all sides suspected him, his loyalties and his intentions, but he escaped the guillotine that took the lives of so many others like him. His wife, who he left pregnant and with their baby daughter to go off to fight a war that wasn’t his, not only didn’t fight with him over his mistress, she embraced her and included her in family functions. She even tracked him down in prison in Austria, and got herself admitted there, to be with him until his release or death. Lafayette was a very lucky young man.

His second act was clearly different. The French Revolution took down anyone associated with royalty, nobility or religion, and Lafayette clearly had to go. He fled, and was caught, and spent five years in solitary, withering away. Incredibly, after years of searching, his wife and daughters joined him there, and the misery they endured shortened Adrienne’s life visibly and demonstrably. Her utter devotion would allow her to leave no stone unturned to be with him. She most dramatically helped him survive. In his weakened physical and financial state, he then bounced from effort to effort, frustrated in continual setbacks.

His one consistent focus, the force that unified his entire being, was liberty. He lived it and breathed it, and let it put him peril time and again. He abandoned his family, spent his fortune lost most of his property and income, and stood up to power again and again for liberty.

The life he led was nothing less than astounding. He was the personal friend of five US presidents, and crossed rhetorical swords with kings and emperors. He proved himself repeatedly to young men and women who would later rise to positions of power, to whom he could and did appeal for help. And they responded, from ambassadors to presidents. It was most definitely A Life That Matters, and is the most continuously remarkable lifestory in print.

Great Book, But Not A Fan of the Format

The Marquis de Lafayette was a very interesting individual. Born to French Royalty, he was on track for a life as a senior French military officer, likely to see no more hostile action than an occasional smuggler. Instead, he embarks on a lifetime of crusades for the rights or ordinary people, both in the Americas and Europe.

=== The Good Stuff ===

* David Weitzman tries very hard to capture the life and thoughts of Lafayette. The prose is captivating, and sucks you in from the first few paragraphs. The prose was lively and exciting, and there are few passages written in 18th century style, which always breaks my concentration. I ended up reading the book in a couple sittings, and enjoyed it very much.

* The book is mostly “self-contained”, although your reading experience will probably be enhanced if you have at least a working knowledge of the American Revolution and Europe’s Napoleonic wars. Weitzman coaches you through the tangled alliances of Europe, but some of the actions may seem illogical to readers without a good background.

* The “memoir” is complete. It starts with the young Lafayette making his way into French society, and takes us through his personal, military and political trials and tribulations. Lafayette was an important figure, both in the fledgling United States and the salons and palaces of Europe. He is an important part of the American Revolution, the French Revolution and the battles of Napoleon. All of these take their toll on his health, his personal life and those of his family. You can’t help but wonder if he found the cost was worth the gains.

=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===

* I am not a fan of “first-person biographies.” While Weitzman seems to do his best to give an honest look at Lafayette’s life, in my opinion the first person writing style gives the prose more credibility than if it was in a 3rd person voice. I find this especially troublesome when the memoir relates personal feelings and thoughts.

* The book did not include footnotes, references, or any source information for how Weitzman created the memoir. Given the first-person concerns listed above, I find this especially troublesome. The version I was reading was a galley proof, so this may be corrected in the final version.

=== Summary ===

Lafayette was a very interesting individual, and this book was a great look at his life. His story is somewhat of a public triumph and a personal tragedy, and Shakespeare would recognize Lafayette as one of his own. While I had some concerns about the memoir format and its lack of references, the book does ring true and lines up with other histories with which I am familiar. I believe Weitzman set out to write very readable story, and he succeeded-but I wish he had also turned his work in to a more formal and traditional biography.

If the issues I pointed out don’t bother you, any history fans will enjoy the book.

Great addition to the book

I bought these for my daughter and she says they are well done, includes plenty of challenging practice problems and it makes it easy to study anywhere. I would say these are only to be used to supplement the book and work great for reviewing ideas and terms.

I love the Carlyles!

This novel was perfect--fun, frothy, and fast-paced with real heart. I loved seeing the characters grow and develop over the 4-book arc and am so sad that the series is finished.

In this one, the Carlyle triplets head away for Thanksgiving, and adventures ensue. But the best thing is how the writer really developed each of the characters and made them just as memorable as the original cast. From Avery's type-A Manhattan glamour girl personality to Baby's hippie-bohemian anything goes vibe to Rhys and Owen's teen boy dramas, it's a really fun read that I think just hasn't gotten as much attention as it deserves.

Definitely pick up this series--it's magical!

All I Want Is Everything-Again.

Love the One You're With was extremely reminiscent of Gossip Girl: All I Want Is Everything, book 3 in the original series. I understand that the Carlyles are "following the footsteps" of the previous crew, but this seemed almost over the top. Over all it was a good story, with originality where it mattered.

I am a huge fan of Gossip Girl series. I do miss the original characters I have followed along since the very beginning. Anyone who loves a good scandal should definitely pick up these books!!

Rejecting the use of diagnostic labels (agoraphobia, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, etc.) as part of a medical legacy best left behind, psychologist Wilson (Mindfulness for Two) and writer Dufrene (Coping with OCD) approach anxiety as a mild dysfunction treatable with "acceptance and commitment therapy" (ACT), a way of becoming "more psychologically limber" in order to "negotiate crowds, participate in social functions, take risks, and so forth." The collaborators contend that behind much anxiety is an inability to deal with ambiguity; as such, they suggest a series of exercises to stop the cycle of brooding that arises from problems that do not have clear, immediate solutions (and which may be unsolvable). Many of the techniques they propose (visualization, "mindful breathing practice") are familiar exercises in mindfulness, but the most important message of ACT is not to avoid situations that produce anxiety. Instead, this empathetic guide helps readers recognize that brooding over painful or disorienting thoughts is a natural part of everyone's life, necessitating the flexibility to "work around obstacles... inside our own heads."

Highly recommended

This was unlike any self-help book that I had ever read, which is why I think that I liked it so much. It is not a quick fix. The use of poetry was especially nice. I refer to this book frequently and have reread the final sections many times. This is a book that you can keep coming back to for a lifetime. If you are often anxious and tend towards avoidance, then definitely check this book out.

Super not just for those who are anxious, but almost anyone

I've finished reading (and rereading) "Things Might Go Terribly, Horribly Wrong," by Kelly Wilson & Troy Dufrene. As I expected from having read the previous book by this duo ("Mindfulness For Two"), this latest work is not only for those of us anxious about our anxiety, but for anyone interested in living well.

It's different than most self-help books. For one thing, it is not a workbook so much as a playbook. It has games you can try out - some hard, some easy - and poems too.

I find that with a few of the games, my mind starts complaining even while I'm reading the instructions on how to play: "That's impossible! That makes no sense!" This is already a hint of the possibilities involved.

I also like the book's discussion of values & how we can commit to them in this moment. And if we fail, as we sometimes do, how we can gently come back to a value & renew our commitment to it.

And those of us who want control at almost any cost (I raise my hand) will benefit from the examples throughout of how helpful it can be to allow life to surprise us.
