They Deserved Each Other

This is a classic account of the events leading up to the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, the treaty negotiations and the effects resulting from the German imposition of a disastrous peace on the Bolshevik regime. Highly recommended both for its portraits of the participants, and its narrative skill. One can only wish the events left the casual reader with someone to admire, or even like, but sometimes in historical conflicts both sides are contemptible. Students will find this very helpful in sorting out a chaotic and consequential series of events.

A Book that Broadened My View of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk

Until I read this book my study of the Brest-Litovsk Treaty was limited only to the struggle of Lenin to obtain a majority of his new Soviet Russian government which would actually allow the government to sign the Brest-Litovsk Treaty with Imperial Germany. There was a strong opposition within the new Soviet government to signing any sort of peace with Germany. Following the recent successful October, 1917, Bolshevik revolution, many Left-Wing Bolsheviks felt that it would be an unforgiveable compromise with the very worst of reactionary forces in the entire world--Imperial Germany. This attitude was shared by Nicholai Bukharin and several "young Bolsheviks" and to some extent also shared by Leon Trotsky. It was the first titanic struggle within the Bolshevik party following the October 1917 revolution.
Soviet and Russian history was a main area of concentration in my undergraduate studies in the 1970s. However, my recent reading this book greatly expanded my view of this important treaty.
