Governance in Dark Times

Stivers writes wonderfully, weaving philosophies of Arendt, Kant, Foucault, Hobbes, Heidegger, and Dewey into an analysis of important demands currently confronting the public administration. She draws normative principles from our tradition of political ideas to specify a path for reforms to the existing administrative ethos, practices, and institutions. Quite remarkably, her book is comprehensive yet accessible. It covers key historical, empirical, and theoretical points while not glossing over too much detail. Moreover, this book has a literary quality to it--a quality that is most rare among books in public administration. While achieving a practical end, Stivers creates haunting metaphors of light and dark that serve as her book's leitmotif. A worthwhile read, a disappointing experience

First and foremost, chapter 10 should be an Appendix. This was a horrible ending to what seemed to be a promising discussion on horizontal scaling for any system/network engineer or astute systems engineer.

Clear and concise, then incoherent and grammatically challenged, this book requires constant read backs leaving the reader with a sense of a diminished level of reading comprehension.

Fortunately there are some very good real world discussions on horizontal scaling, distributed caching, and eliminating single points of failure in your design.

Unfortunately the book was a long documentary on the author's Spread utility/program/solution and the last chapter is dedicated to writing a module for Spread. Completely out of band with regards to actual high performance clustered environments where the author's solution is likely scarce in popularity.

I do appreciate his coverage of logging. Despite my rating, I don't regret the first nine chapters.

I could not put this book down

I picked up this book the other day on the recommendation of a friend, and I can't put it down. I like it because:

* its small (the number of pages 225, the print, the format, the thickness) , but its pithy. Every page has useful stuff.
* the real world experience (pain!) just oozes out of this book. So many times while reading I thought: "Oh yes ... hadn't thought of that."
* its not stridently opensource, nonetheless ends up most there anyway - but only after addressing commercial products and their role
* its business focused, not geek focused - while still being incredibly geeky

Most of all its just really well written and edited. I've caught a couple of minor typos, but nothing that interfered with reading or enjoying the book.

In a world of many great technical books, and insufficient time to read them, its hard to know which ones are worth the effort. This one definitely is.

The previous reviews don't really do it justice

This is a fantastic book about scalable systems. If you want specifics, he presents opensource and cost effective solutions that can be implemented, but in my opinion that isn't the real value of the book.

The real value is the way he leads you through the thought processess that need to occur as you plan for releasing and using such a system. I really like some of the stuff that is emphasized and has caused me to realize that I had gaps in my knowledge. Gaps like better release planning, and actual cost of such a system, especially as it grows, or shrinks.

I've been extremely happy with this purchase.

I have been waiting for this story for what seems like forever. Toby and Raziel have been big players in this series since the beginning and the author has teased me with the promise of their HEA for too long. However, I have had this one in my possession for some time but have not been able to bring myself to read it. This is for several reasons. The first is that this is the final installment of a series I have loved since the prequel and I am not ready for it to end. The second reason is that I knew this would be an emotional story. Even the blurb itself brought forth a reaction from me. But I could not put this off any longer so I finally broke down and read it.

And I was so right. It was emotional. It was a bit hopeless at first, with poor Tobyy hidden away where the guardian could not sense him. Then it got a bit hopeful with “Raven” making an appearance and the author letting the reader know he was not what he seemed. Then I was happy when “Raven,” who actually turned out to be Rogan (Roman’s father and demi-god) gave Eydan what for and sent him to be eternally punished for his bad behavior. Then things turned to love and my heart soared because Raziel and Toby finally got to be together in real life, not just mentally. Oh I was so ecstatic that they could finally be together after so much suffering. And then came the fear and sadness as Toby did what I knew he would do. He sacrificed himself to save the world. But NO! He and Raziel just met and now Toby was being taken away again. Then there was restrained hope and admiration as the guardians banned together to try to save Toby. And holy s***! Raziel’s true angelic form is revealed and WOW just WOW.

Finally, amazement and happiness returned as Raziel and Toby were saved by Raziel’s father. I cried a bit here as Raziel’s father was so selfless in his love that he made the ultimate sacrifice to save his son and his son’s mate.

This final installment of the Preternatural Rescue Centre series wrapped up the series arc nicely and left things in a great place. I know this series will not be for everyone, but I have loved these men from the very beginning and am so sad to see them go. But while I am going to miss them all, the ending was satisfying and I am looking forward to more of Ms. Cross’s works.
