An essential read for Catholics and anyone interested in the Church

I have dipped into many books and articles on Vatican II and have come away confused. So many books are seen through the prism of a particular prejudice that it is hard to sort out fact from fiction. This is a wonderful introduction to one of the most important events of the 20th Century. My appreciation for Vatican II grew in leaps and bounds after reading this book. This is truly a remarkable work: lucid and informative. This is a must read for those who are Catholic and anyone who has an interest on the impact of the Church in the world. It is neither left nor right. It will allow you draw your own conclusions. For myself it became clear to me that the work of the council was absolutely necessary and timely, especially in understanding the changes to the liturgy. It also is made clear that the Vatican II did not come out of the blue, rather, it was part of an evolution in thinking that had been brewing for years. I wouldn't even attempt to read another book on the council until reading this.

Excellent Review of Vatican II's History

Margaret Lavin's history of the Vatican II's documents reflect, I would think, the discussions and inputs of many class sessions with graduate students. The reflections on the genesis of the teachings and insights of the bishops at Vatican II and on the implementation of these teachings is excellent. At a half century from the "moments, one tends to forget how stunning those "moments" actually were, how they have changed the Church and society, and how much change is still ongoing. This is a most useful text for a discussion group of those who experienced both the "before" and "after" of the Council.

Fascinating stuff

I got this book as an accompaniment for a Game Theory class I am taking currently. I enjoyed reading this on the side. It was not as easy to read as my assigned textbook but I felt that it went into greater depth about certain subjects vs. the traditional game theory book.

I would recommend this for Econ majors (such as myself) or those with a particular penchant for Game Theory.

Error-riddled Kindle Edition

Don't buy the Kindle Edition. The typesetting is horrible, it is impossible to read. What's more, there are typos everywhere, and some of the formulas are incorrect and certainly do not match the original, printed version.

With most mistakes you can puzzle out what the original probably says, but at one point, the author intends to use a cumulative probability function F(x) and then f(x) to denote its derivative, but the Kindle Edition depicts them both capital F(x). I'm a patient man, but that's what prompted me to write this review and warn others away.

Maybe it'll do in a pinch if you really, really hate printed books, but avoid if at all possible.

A concise primer for undergrads

This is a nice book on game theory if you're not very mathematically inclined. It was recommended as a supplementary text for a graduate-level course that I took, and I enjoyed it as such. But for a more thorough introductory text for undergrads, I strongly recommend Osborne's An Introduction to Game Theory. This one is preferable only if you're allergic to rudimentary set theory.

Marjorie Susan Venit is Professor Emerita of Ancient Mediterranean Art and Archaeology at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is the author of Monumental Tombs of Ancient Alexandria: The Theater of the Dead and Greek Painted Pottery from Naukratis in Egyptian Museums. Her previous book projects have been supported by generous grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Kress Foundation, and the J. Paul Getty Trust. Among her other national awards are a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship and fellowships from the American Research Center in Egypt, the American Association of University Women, and the American Philosophical Society.

I can give you a summary of the book aka the real story of how this company was created.

Darren wants to start an insurance agency. So he applies for a business license and employs immigrants seeking work visas. The immigrants know that their work visa is contingent upon their employment and they are willing to do whatever it takes to stay in the country, as long as it is not illegal. Darren instructs the immigrants to tell every new employee that they hire that they are making close to a six figure incomes in three years, and that this was accomplished by following Darren's business model and sales script. Since lying to college students is not illegal, the immigrants go along with it. Next Darren holds group hiring sessions to quickly recruit recent college graduates. These college graduates are instructed to cold call 8 hours a day to prospect small businesses that want to switch insurance agents. Any appointments booked by the recent college grads are attended by Darren or one of the immigrants. During the appointment, they will tell you that they can save you 22% on your insurance premiums by switching brokers. What they really mean is that they'll downgrade your plan so you receive less benefits and pay lower premiums. It's nothing ground breaking, but when you have dozens of college students cold calling local businesses 8 hours a day, you eventually find some people who are willing to switch brokers. It's a number game.

Many college grads stick around for months, sometimes even years before finally realizing that Darren never had any intent on sharing the full commission that he promised. He only shares commission with the immigrants so that they can uphold the image of success and one or two females that he befriends. Eventually the college grads realize that this is a sham, they inevitable search for new work and Darren keeps the accounts and commission to himself. Repeat this cycle after almost a decade and now Darren is rich because literally hundreds, possibly up to a thousand college graduates, have worked for months at a time making cold calls to prospect small businesses, only to leave those accounts behind.

If you view the contact page on each website, they all have the same address in Irvine, CA. He's trying to create the illusion of success and wealth.

While this guy might not be breaking any laws, he is as shady as they come. He'll tell say things like, "there's enough businesses in a 10 miles radius to support all the new brokers", "if you stick with his program for three years, you'll make it too, but it's a tough job and not everyone is cut out to work on commission because some people just don't have what it takes". He's basically using reverse psychology on you to get you to think you need to work hard for free if you want to make it and if you don't, it's your own damn fault.

The truth is, there is no merit system in which the employees are promoted to ever receive commission. You only believe it is possible to achieve a reasonable income through this system because the immigrants parrot this lie to you. In truth, Darren just gives out just enough commission to sustain the illusion and keeps the rest for himself. As a real agent, you can get signed up by any health care provider on your own and collect 100% of the commission yourself from day one. As a new agent, you sometimes split commission and earn a draw during the training process. At APEX - you work for free and sign all your accounts under Darren's name.

He's been pulling the same trick on college students for almost a decade now. His ploy has probably evolved over time, but here's the real story behind Apex. The fact that he's even written a book to white wash his history is actually a smart move but it's also rather disgusting at the same time.

If Amazon continues to sell this book, I hope they re-categorize this to the appropriate section - "Fiction".

Inspiring ... far more compelling than I expected

This is one of the few books in recent memory that I actually enjoyed reading. I generally have pretty low expectations for books of this genre, but the combination of insightful advice and real world applicability gave this book a certain legitimacy and usefulness I've found similar titles lacking.

I've already put several of the strategies in this book into practice in my own life, and have been pleasantly surprised by the results. To be fair, I have a background in insurance that makes this book especially relevant for me, but this text has so much useful information that anyone who wants to build a better company or even just learn more about what it takes to be successful will get a lot out of this book.

Amazing Legacy in Action

This book embarked the beginning of a legacy being built by Darren Sugiyama and his team. Purchased in bulk by a multi-billion dollar company, I've had the pleasure of not only reading, but actually experiencing the training behind the story with the author himself. While my agency operates in a different fashion (as many do)the lesson has been engrained and our sales have continued to rise steadily year over year. I highly encourage to start with this read, then move to the next chapter, The Icon Effect.

Great Read!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Before Saying Yes to The Ring". Although I already said yes to my fiance it was refreshing to hear of her testimony and walk with Christ. I could definitely relate to a lot of the things she struggles with and her experiences with previous relationships and addictions. The book references scripture and constantly enforces that this is her journey. Sometimes authors can feel "pushy" but this was the complete opposite with Karolyne. She was honest, transparent, and came from a loving place. I think the book is perfect for someone courting/in a relationship/single and desiring a relationship. Regardless, I'm engaged and it was still a blessing to read. God bless!

Karolyne, writes such an inspirational story and becomes very, very transparent in this book. Many of her early life experiences relate so closely to mine....I am so happy she found love and most importantly, stopped comprimising herself and started to follow God's direction.

This book was an eye opener I purchased it because I am now in the engaged season of my life. We're in pre-marital counseling at our church and we have stood strong in our faith. I wanted to read something that fed the slight insecurity I felt about not being fully prepared. But after reading I have been able to connect all the lessons with the ones in the book and it has brought some ideals full circle. This is an honest and very expressive book and I'm thankful for the transparency that was shown in happy and frustrating times. A must read 4 stars from me.
