About the Author

Terry Robertson, PhD, is an associate professor and department chair in the department of health, physical education, recreation, and dance at Northwest Missouri State University. He has worked in therapeutic recreation for over 30 years as a practitioner, consultant, and educator.

Dr. Robertson is a past president of the National Therapeutic Recreation Society, the regional independent living center, the Missouri Therapeutic Recreation Society, and the Nevada Therapeutic Recreation Society. He also served on the Utah Therapeutic Recreation Licensure for 6 years and was the director of CEUs for the Midwest Symposium on Therapeutic Recreation for over 20 years. Dr. Robertson is currently serving a 4-year, publicly elected term on his county's health board and has served on numerous other boards and in other leadership capacities for related organizations. He is currently serving locally on his county's organization for group homes. Dr. Robertson was also a codeveloper of the Case Histories section of the Therapeutic Recreation Journal. Currently known as Practice Perspectives, this section helps the profession examine individual and group interventions and contributes information on best practices, interventions, and treatment concerns to research literature.

Terry Long, PhD, is an associate professor in the department of health, physical education, recreation, and dance at Northwest Missouri State University, where he has coordinated the therapeutic recreation curriculum since 2000. He is also the director of the HPERD Abilities Laboratory. His specialty is applications of therapeutic recreation in the mental health realm, particularly in the area of behavior disorders. Dr. Long also has a master's degree in clinical psychology and worked with various mental health agencies and facilities over the past 10 years in both clinical and outdoor settings.

Dr. Long is an associate editor for Therapeutic Recreation Journal and an associate editor for SCHOLE. He is past president of the Missouri Therapeutic Recreation Society, at-large director for the National Therapeutic Recreation Society Board of Directors (2006-2008 term), and the board president for the independent living center serving the Northwest Region of Missouri. He is past president of the Missouri Park and Recreation Association Educators Section.

About the Author
Lynn Visson holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University, taught Russian language and literature at Columbia University, and was a staff interpreter at the United Nations. She teaches interpretation and translation at the Monterey Institute of International Studies and at other American and European universities. Of Russian background, she is the author of several books including Wedded Strangers: The Challenges of Russian-American Marriages (Hippocrene Books, 2001), and numerous books and articles on Russian language, literature, and culture. Dr. Visson travels frequently to Russia; she is a member of the editorial boards of Mosty, a Moscow-based journal on translation and interpretation, and the American-based journal SlavFile.

Good book about pitfalls of Russian-English translation

I wish I had this book when I first arrived to the U.S. 15 years ago. Those days I used to encounter a stare when I translated my thoughts directly. Visson's example `He's a very non-stupid person' is a Russian way of saying `He is bright'. A common image of Russians as negative and gloomy in American media has a grammatical explanation, because Russian favors negative word formations, which are often misunderstood. The famous Russian "Nelzya" -- It's not allowed, It's not possible -- often doesn't mean that. "Nelzya letet from Moscow to Madrid" -- "Can't fly (not allowed?) from Moscow to Madrid" means "There is no direct flight from Moscow to Madrid".
It is a wonderful little book that explains perils of translation. All Russians who study English (and vise-versa - Americans studying Russian) could benefit from it. The book shows why simply "knowing" the language isn't enough and has a lot of good examples.

Translators into and out of Russian should read this

I have been a Russian to English translator for about 40 years. I loved this book and learned from it. I think that more emphasis should be given to its utility for R to E and E to R translators/interpreters at virtually any level. By the way it is a delightfully amusing read for those of us who are bicultural.

Thank you for writing this book! It is light-hearted, intelligent, and it is a great contribution to deconstructing the languages of both Russian and American cultures. It brings smiles, but is also a serious source of information.
Before reading this book I was always a fan of word-for-word translations, but now it is clear that those don't always do justice to the meaning and emotion of what's being said. Strangely enough, this book helped me to better understand my mother who speaks Russian and English but had to learn both of these languages as an adult. Sometimes she says things that only make sense in her native language. I guess whatever culture people grow up with is forever ingrained into them and the best thing we can do is to learn how to understand those cultures.
Great read! Treat it as a textbook and a leisure read at the same time. I recommend it to every Russian speaker who wants to bridge the gap between these two cultures.

Timely, Thoughtful, and often very funny!

"The Wedding of Zein" actually includes three separate stories, all set in pleasant, rural, Muslim villages of the Sudan, in Africa. The book is named after one of the stories. The other two are called "The Doum Tree of Wad Hamid," and "A Handful of Dates." Each tale has the universal feel of a fable -- the wisdom they encode in their simple language can speak to anyone, anywhere, anytime. The Muslim characters have a few traits which could seem odd to Western readers, but basically they are just like small town folks all over the world. They walk with dignity, they live in peace amidst old friends and loved ones, and they cherish their own dreams of love and happiness.
The title story is my favorite. Zein is sort of a "holy fool" in his little village. He is not exactly retarded, or crazy, but is clearly eccentric. He seems to promote laughter and good feelings wherever he goes, although sometimes this is at his own expense. Many of the villagers laugh at him. All of the villagers laugh with him. Zein seems unaware that there could be a distinction between these groups of people, and, perhaps, therein lies his potential for healing... He is betrothed to the beautiful, solemn, almond-eyed Ni'ma, before whom he has NEVER made a fool of himself. She, and she alone, holds this honor... Their courtship, and the impact it has upon the village, comprises a highly provocative, and ultimately warm, view into human nature. You won't forget this comedic, yet highly serious, love story.
Taken together, these stories really got me thinking about what it's like to live in an average Muslim village. It makes me want to know these people better, they're nice people, just like anyone else.

Here is a short novel, The Wedding of Zein, and two short stories. Salih displays a timelessness, humanity and hunor that had led many to hail him as the current genius of ARabic literature.

Such A Great Story!

I really enjoyed this book!! I was a little hesitant because "war stories" are not my usual genre, however, a friend recommended it to me and I decided to give it a try. I was delightfully surprised that the story isn't entirely focused on the war, but of a man and his trials and tribulations throughout his life. Great Read! Highly Recommend!!

Incredibly Valuable at Any Price

I bought this book long ago, at a used book store, but never had the nerve to use it until a few months ago. I'm now in the middle of the eighteenth project in the book (there are 22 projects.) I've learned so much from this book and recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to paint in oils. I made a major mistake by not following one of Mr. Stern's instructions exactly and it caused me tremendous grief. I hope to spare you the frustration I experienced by not doing as he said.

The book tells you to line the walls and floor of the setup box with "inexpensive assorted colored papers - the kind children use in school." I ignored this and (clever me!) decided to buy a variety of large, much more colorful sheets from a rack at Hobby Lobby. As a consequence, I would spend up to 20 minutes trying to match the color of a sheet of paper, and never succeed. I would simply give up and use the paint that was the closest match that I could produce. I realized just the other day why I could never match the paper's color. I was using the less expensive, student-grade paints recommended in the book. Since this kind of paint lacks the rich, intense pigment load of artist-grade paint, I could NEVER produce the bright, intense colors of the papers I bought. So do exactly what the author says to do: buy a pad of children's construction paper. The relatively dull, muted colors can be easily duplicated with student-grade paint.

Here's one other tip. The author tells you to make a "spot screen", which is a small rectangular piece of gray cardboard with a hole punched in it. You look at your subject through the hole to isolate an individual color. (It's funny that he refers to it as "gray"; elsewhere in the book he lists words like "gray", "brown" and "black" as taboo.) In any event, make sure the gray is a perfectly neutral gray, exactly midway between white and black and without any noticeable color tint. If the gray of your spot screen is too light, and you'll see and paint colors darker than they really are; if it's too dark, you'll see and paint colors lighter than they really are. And if the gray leans slightly towards some color, what you see through the hole will lean toward that color's complement; e.g., if your card's gray is slightly red, what you see through the hole will be slightly green.

To sum up, this book is a treasure trove of information, and if you faithfully do each project you'll be amazed at how much you learn, and how much your confidence grows.

Simply the best

Of the many books in my art instruction collection, I rate this one at No. 1. It has had the greatest influence on me of any lessons or books I've had. If you treat this book as a course in painting you will: 1) learn how to mix absolutely any color with dead-on accuracy, 2) get practical advice on setting up materials and aids (for example, his "spotter" to isolate colors -- simple but indispensible), and 3) become comfortable with the painting knife, which most amateur artists shy away from. Get this book and devote a few months to it. You'll never regret it.

(Note: He shows the use of oil paints. I prefer acrylics, and used them for these lessons without any problems.)

Waste no more time with flaky, new age egopainting. This is it.

Arthur Stern, student of the legacy of that almost-lost thread that has passed through Classical art, the Renaissance masters, the Baroque masters, into Chase, Hawthorne, Henri (and his students- Bellows, Hopper, Kent, etc.), the Bay Area artists (etc.), offers up the eye-clearing humility, without BS, that is necessary to see in order to paint what Cezanne called the "ensemble".

Akin to tuning a guitar, the method reveals that the harmony of the few notes ("spots" of value/hue/chroma) must be chorded before you learn how to glue an American flag and a photocopy of the Twin Towers to your 21st Century bombast. THE FUNDAMENTAL basis for painting. A pathway, not to be viewed as a fixed style or dogmatic cul-de-sac, but a route of initiation to Beauty.

Hawthorne/Hensche purists irk me with their holier-than-thou, plein air fascism (and some of their students with how-to books should be, with Thomas Kincaid, whipped), but I DO agree that THIS IS THE DOOR TO THE WAY. Beautiful, simple truth. Reprint Stern's book before the world ends.
