Yet another complete reference library in one book.

Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships 1922-1946 is the third in a series of 4 books which, as the title suggests, lists all the worlds fighting ships built during the period in question. Initially, these were post-WW1 years in which some countries favoured disarmament whilst others harboured expansionist plans. This was also a time when the Aircraft Carrier would totally eclipse the mighty Battleship as "King of the Seas." Eventually, the advent of WW2 and the way in which the USA entered that war added a whole new dimension to warship design and production.

Conway Maritime Press are well known for their factual books on ships - especially warships, in which they provide the finest technical documentation. "All the World's Fighting Ships 1922-1946" is hard-back measuring 12�" x 8�" with 456 pages of detailed and factual information. After a brief foreword and an explanation of abbreviations used, the navies of the world are listed by country in order of their size and importance at the beginning of the period in question - i.e. Great Britain and Empire Forces, USA, Japan, Germany, etc and continuing right down to the world's smallest navies from the Middle East, Far East and Latin America. Each country's ships are then displayed by "class" commencing with the largest capital ships and progressing all the way down to the smallest torpedo boats (or whatever) with the oldest vessels mentioned first. For each class there is one or more of those profile line drawings which have become Conway's trademark. These are followed by all the usual technical details such as; Displacement, dimensions, machinery, armour, armament and complement followed by the names of each ship within that class - it's builder, date laid down, date completed and fate. These are accompanied by a very "readable" text from which we learn of the political intrigue of the day, variations between vessels, refits, new equipment, whatever defects or other problems beset either the class or a specific ship and a short r�sum� of the fate of each vessel.

Altogether, the book is well illustrated with an excellent selection of historic black and white original photographs throughout with at least one picture on almost every page.

In summary, this is an excellent technical work of reference and one which will continue to stand the test of time. Put another way, this is one of those books you will wish you had bought - after it becomes out of print.

Look, I'm the 9th person to review this work and the 8th to give it the full five stars

This weighty tome may appear to be more useful as some sort of murder weapon (blunt force trauma I think the TV shows call it) but.... wow.

A book as dense on statistics as it's size would indicate this thing is replete with ship histories, vital (and non vital) stats and a whole heapin' helpin' of line drawings and photographs that make this an excellent reference work for naval historians, naval wargamers and modellers. The barrage of raw data will have your inner pedantic whinger fully satisfied and given it covers a fairly important era (WW2 - duh) is the sort of thing that the general armchair general may also very well like on their bookshelf along with the other volumes in this series. If your bookshelf and your wallet can take the collective strain that is.

Overall this is the sort of book none of your friends can afford but that they'll all want to flick through when they come over. A fine, fine reference work that belongs on every naval buffs collection.

I am awarding only one star mostly because the title of this book is NOT correct. The title, as shown on the cover, is:

The Art of Investing in Distressed Second Mortgages

The word "Second" is clearly important, and missing from the Amazon title.

Other justification is that it is only 56 pages, with many chapters having only 2 pages. It is extremely light on information, and you don't even get out of the introduction before being asked to buy more training from the author's website. Perhaps that training is where the information is which should have been included in this book.

As someone who has worked closely with Sherman in his ventures, this book does an excellent job explaining his philosophies and giving insight into this lucrative investing area. I wonder if an editor actually went through the book.

As a student, having spent two semesters with this book I can say it is really bad. The first semester was more of an exercise of how to read this book, e.g. it jumps around, the variables are littered throughout the written text (good luck finding them) and examples often refer to other examples and you'll spend a lot of time just jumping to and from the question to the other questions to the example they are based on. This book lacks clarity, focus and in an effort to give explanations, it leaves you in a overly verbose explanation for the math that would, should only cover a page.

About the Author

Andr�a Curiacos Bertolini is involved in scientific research on starch and biopolymers. She has a PhD in food science from the Universit� de Nantes in France, where she worked with a concentration on starch chemistry at the Institute Nationale de Recherche Agronomique (INRA) in partnership with the Centre de Coop�ration Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le D�veloppement (CIRAD). As an invited researcher, she worked at the Fonterra Research Centre in New Zealand and at the University of Idaho in the United States on Modified Starches and Starch Rheology. At present she is a food scientist at the Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecu�ria (EMBRAPA–Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation, Brazil). Her interests include biopolymers with an emphasis on starch characterization, modified starches, and starch as an ingredient in food and nonfood products.

About the Author
Sandra Rendgen is an art historian who has worked for both print and interactive media. After completing her studies in Amsterdam and Berlin, she contributed as a picture editor to German magazines and newspapers, such as Vanity Fair, Die Welt am Sonntag, and to TASCHEN’s Interiors Now! As an editor, she develops interactive media installations for various museums and institutions.

Julius Wiedemann was born in Brazil, studied graphic design and marketing, and was an art editor for digital and design magazines in Tokyo. His many TASCHEN digital and media titles include Illustration Now!, Advertising Now, Logo Design, and Brand Identity Now!

Knowledge Translation: Infographics and the Future of Statistical Communication,

Data are complicated. Statistics are a challenge. Knowledge translation is important. The Atlas of Infographics uses artistic design to convey information into knowledge that everyone can understand. The understanding of data is not only for the elite. Infographics are both entertaining and contribute to understanding. This is the "Atlas" of the future and, as usual, produced by Taschen in top quality print. Now that we have the World Wide Web and Wikipedia, this will take the place of the Encyclopedia Britannica on your bookshelf. Combining science and art, it is another treasure from Taschen.

Taschen's Understanding The World : Atlas Of Infographics is an expansive visual atlas that presents the most exciting, creative and inspiring ways of explaining the world in information graphics.

Featuring some 280 graphics in total, the book is divided into 5 chapters - environment, technology, economics, society, and culture to reveal some of the Earth's greatest intricacies in accessible visual form, all housed in a massive hardcover tome.

Each piece of infographic is cramped full of figures and facts but the huge amount of information presented is always well complemented by the beautifully designed visuals, making reading an enjoyment.

It's quite impossible not to learn a thing or two about the planet on which we live in, even if you only browse through just a couple of pages from this gigantic volume. Imagine what you will reap if you read it from cover to cover. My highest recommendations.
