About the Author
Tom Alessi was born and raised in Rochester, New York. He enlisted in the US Marine Corp for four years after graduating high school in 1967. Graduating from Monroe Community College in 1978 with an associate’s degree in criminal justice, Mr. Alessi joined the Rochester Police Department the following year, where he patrolled the streets as both an officer and a sergeant. In 1987, Sergeant Alessi transferred to the Special Criminal Investigation Section’s Narcotics Unit, where he served as commander of a specialized street drug enforcement unit until it was disbanded in 1990. After leaving the RPD in 1992, he worked for the Palmyra NY Police Department, then joining the East Rochester NY Police Department in 1995. While there, he served as it's firearms instructor and began the department’s first DARE program. Mr. Alessi retired with the rank of sergeant in August 2003. In 2005 he relocated to South West Florida where he owns and operates a firearms training business. He has two adult children and five grandchildren.

A must read book

This book was written by a man who was one of five police officers that were wrongfully arrested and brought to trial for crimes they never committed. Thank god these men stood their ground and defended the absurd charges that they were facing. The author did a magnificent job of articulating the story. If anyone has ever been falsely accused or feared being falsely accused, this is a must read book.

Every chapter had me wanting to know more. I was on an emotional roller-coaster and had to often remind myself this is a TRUE story. With each twist and turn I'd be thinking how could this have really happend.

These "2 in 1" Perry Mason novels were published in the mid-1970s. They had two novels combined in one paperback at a bargain price. Erle Stanley Gardner was "the World's Greatest Author" in his time, his novels outsold the combined totals of his rivals. Gardner wrote the "Perry Mason" novels from 1933 to 1970, and other works. Gardner, and others, formed "The Court of Last Resort" in the 1940s to investigate the wrongfully convicted. The background of the stories tell of the era. Gardner never put dates in his novels, but the monetary figures date these stories.

"The Case of the Waylaid Wolf" (1960) begins in a company parking lot. Arlene Ferris can't start her car. Loring Lamont, the son of the owner, offers her a ride. Arlene escaped Loring's advances, and later consulted Perry Mason. But Loring was murdered that night, the police are looking for a young woman. Mason advises his client to visit her friend, and begins working on this case. The police find Arlene and charge her with the murder. Mason learns Arlene's friend got a payoff to skip town, and finds a solution to Arlene's innocence that is consistent with the known facts. "The function of a court of law ... is to see that justice is done". The newly discovered facts lead to the real killer, and Arlene is freed. One of the lessons of this story is why circumstantial evidence (the clothes on the victim) is most reliable.

"The Case of the Shapely Shadow" (1960) begins when Janice Wainwright visits Perry Mason's office for confidential advice. She was given a suitcase to deliver to a locker. Janice believes this is blackmail money. Perry gives her legal advice. Next morning Janice calls as her employer Morley Theilman has gone missing, and a detective is looking for him. They find that the suitcase is missing from the locker. Perry explains how this trick works (duplicated keys). Perry talks to the current Mrs. Theilman, and gains information. Now Janice Wainwright can't be found, and they discover the real name of the second Mrs. Theilman. Perry and Della fly to Las Vegas to surprise Janice. A shocking surprise occurs at the train station. Janice apologizes to Perry and explains what she did. Lt. Tragg shows up to question Janice about the murder of Mr. Theilman. Mrs. Theilman was led away by a police officer. Perry tries to question Mrs. Theilman, but the local police show up and order him to leave the state. An important cross-examination negates some of the circumstantial evidence against Perry's client. This is about as close as Perry Mason came to losing a case. One problem with a lone eyewitness is that they may be mistaken or lying when there is no corroboration for their statements. [A "smooth shadow" is one that is not noticed. A "rough shadow" is one who makes sure he is noticed.]

The Case of the Waylaid Wolf

This book is dedicated to Park Street, an attorney of San Antonio Texas, and an investigator and counsel of the Court of Last Resort. They have investigated cases where innocent persons have been wrongly convicted. His "Perry Mason Room" is dedicated to the ideals of unswerving loyalty to a client, a devotion to the cause of justice, and an indomitable fighting spirit.

This story begins in a company parking lot. Arlene Ferris can't start her car that evening, but a stranger happens by and offers her a ride. He is the son of the company's owner. Then Loring Lamont makes a detour to their country home to drop off some papers. This turned out to be a trick on Arlene, she escaped Loring's advances, and the next day consulted Perry Mason. But they find out that Loring was murdered that night, and the police know Loring was with a young woman. Mason advises his client to visit her friend, and begins working on this case. The police find Arlene and charge her with the murder.

Chapter Five tells of the problem with personal identification. If a victim looks over mug shots, and later sees that person in a police lineup, the victim will likely identify a familiar face. Some people have accurate memories, other people don't. The cross-examination in Chapter Ten focuses on the identification by two eye-witnesses. As in the real world, its who you know that can help you land a job (Chapter Twelve).

Then Mason finds that Arlene's friend got a payoff to skip town, and finds a solution to Arlene's innocence that is consistent with the known facts. "The function of a court of law ... is to see that justice is done" (Chapter Fourteen). The newly discovered facts leads to the real killer, and Arlene is freed. One of the lessons of this story is why circumstantial evidence (the clothes on the victim) is most reliable.

A Very Good Late Novel

One of the better late novels. This one was written in 1960, after the TV series had become a huge hit. Gardner was never especially good as drawing vivid characters (except Perry and Della over time), but in the later books (after, say, 1955) he almost gives up. The writing is quite spare and lacks most any descriptive phrases. Nonetheless, the amazing plots remain, and that's why one reads Perry Mason stories. This one is a real page turner.

It concerns a young woman who is almost raped by a rich lothario, the wolf who gets waylaid. The key scene takes place in an out of the way "cabin" owned by the company the wolf's father owns. (That's a recurring theme in Perry Mason novels: a rich older man with a ne'er do well son.) The woman (later defendant) manages to escape and drives off with the wolf's car. She parks it next to a fire hydrant for some gentle revenge, calls a friend, and then the action really begins.

She's an especially sympathetic defendant, and there is a good selection of other suspects. As often happens, Perry (and Della too) get into some hot water of their own, which builds tension. Very recommended.

About the Author
Joseph A. DeVito received his BA from Hunter College in 1960, his MA from Temple University in 1962 and his PhD from the University of Illinois in 1964.� After receiving his PhD, he taught at Hunter College-in-the-Bronx (later Lehman College).� He has taught a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, though he has concentrated on the undergraduate level and mainly on the introductory courses. He has served on the editorial boards of Quarterly Journal of Speech, Communication Monographs, Communication Education, Communication Quarterly, Journal of Communication, and Etc: A Review of General Semantics.��

Excellent book, but may not be necessary.

I literally used only 2 pages from this book and made an A in my speech class. I honestly don't know if I should consider that a good thing because the book was expensive for being 1s and 0s on my PC. Unless your instructor is going to be quizzing/making exams from the book I suggest you save your money and simply get the 2 pages that illustrate the outline. If you have a speech instructor/professor/teacher earning their pay this book is pointless. Two Stars for the 2 pages. I am by no means belittling the author or his effort, the book has a lot of excellent information for future public speakers but if speech as a class is nothing more than something to mark off on your degree/graduation plan then just find the speech outline.

I ordered this book because it was required for my speech class. It did have a lot of common sense information that most people would already know but the book was very helpful, informative and interesting. Even if the book is not a requirement, I would recommend to anyone seeking a higher level of knowledge in speaking.

This was a good generic module and a happy change for anyone who doesn't feel like developing their own adventure but campaign in their own setting. It can be almost drop fitted into an ongoing campaign. While this module *can* stand on its own, it is highly tied into the Eye of Pain and Eye to Eye. I gave it 4 out of five stars because of its inability to be a true stand alone adventure.

Inscoe is the editor of the New Georgia Encyclopedia and secretary-treasurer of the Southern Historical Association.

A must for a Southern bibliofile

This book tends to be a bit on the academic side but it is written very well and covers many books that I'd not been aware of. So glad that I bought this. Up here in the northwest suburbs of Chicago we don't have many books on the South but luckily Amazon carries a wealth of obscure titles....long may you reign, Amazon!
