Full of misunderstandings with some insights

I was looking forward to this book! An important hole in the current agile literature and a book only on this subject. Finally... but ... I'm extremely disappointed.

Jochen Krebs' Agile Portfolio Management consists of 3 parts. Part one is called "Agile for Managers", part two is the things about portfolio management and part three is *other* called organization and environment.

The first part consists of three chapters. The first chapter consists a general motivation for agile development and responding to change. The second chapter is a short introduction to Agile development and the last chapter an introduction to project management. This takes up 1/4th of the book. The explanations are poorly written and full with misunderstandings. To give a concrete example, on page 27 Jochen is suggesting that in Scrum you can not have any other meetings except for the daily Scrum. A recommendation which I've never heard before and I'm pretty sure he didn't actually mean that!

Part two consists of about 125 pages and is the main subject of the book, though it starts with three somewhat introduction chapters called Foundation, Metrics and Return of Investment. These chapters don't show too much experience from the author. The suggestion that TDD and Continuous Integration finds defects early so that one of the main quality metrics is open defect count is absurd and goes directly against advise of great agile literature like "Art of Agile development" or "Sustainable Software Development". It gives the feeling the author simply forgot to learn about agile development before he wrote the book. The explanation of story points was vague, the explanation of Use Case points unnecessary. The talk about return of investment forgot to give actual tools for doing so.

After the first 100 pages, I almost threw away the book and was pretty sure I would rate it 1 start. Though, luckily it started to improve. If you buy this book, I recommend to skip the first 100 pages :)

Chapter 7, 8, and 9 cover three portfolios: Project, resource and asset. The project portfolio covered some good ideas like increasing the portfolio decision frequency, using agile metrics and making other decisions than go/kill. The resource portfolio chapter was poor and doesn't talk much about resource management. The asset portfolio chapter is short but covers some important topics not covered frequently in other places.

Part three just consists of two chapters. The first one uses Scrum to become a portfolio management process. I found the idea interest and absurd. Especially the daily portfolio meeting and the portfolio master seen a sure sign of misapplication. The chapter is speculative, the real story about the real situation is missing. It made me doubt the author has actually done this. The second chapter of part three is a chapter about the PMO. I very strongly disagree with the suggestions from the author, especially making the PMO larger for Agile organizations.

In other words, I only thought that part two was worth my time (and only half of that) thats about 50 pages... Next to this, the writing and editing of the book was poor. Some constructions seem very German and sentences are constructed poorly making me sleepy while reading. I wonder if Microsoft Press did any editing at all or supported the author at all. Quite disappointing.

I would not recommend this book to anyone. It's probably better to read some traditional portfolio management book (e.g. Coopers Portfolio Management for New Products) together with some basic Agile books and especially Mike Cohn Agile Estimating and Planning (which covers much of the ROI and value calculation, but explained better). If you read all of these and want some insights and ideas from this book, just read chapter 7, 8 and 9 and skip the rest.

I still rated this book three stars, which is probably too high. After the first 100 pages, I was sure it would not be higher than 1 star. But some chapters contained some insights and that made me decide to give it 2 stars. I switched to three stars simply because I applaud the attempt. This is a new area, there is no existing material and it is great Jochen took this opportunity and tried to fill a gap. Though, a different book is probably needed.

Accurate Assessment of Conventional Software Processes?

While the basic description of agile portfolio management is useful, I found many of the claims about current software project practices to be based on exagerrated weaknesses of these conventional practices.

I believe the author exaggerates the differences between customer expectations and customer requirements. While they can be different, competent systems analysts can capture and document expectations, as well as requirement. The author's view is that traditional requirements analysis, for various reasons cannot be expected to capture customer requirements in a timely and "agile"/adaptable manner. My experience is different.

The author also claims that traditional project management practices contribute to a lack of agility. WBSs, GANT charts and other techniques are inherently inflexible, rigid and labor intensive, in his view. My experience with tools like Microsoft Project is that what-if scenarios and other hypothetical and actual adjustments are easy to create and provide the kind of decision support a project manager needs when requirements change, resources come and go, or schedules tighten unexpectedly.

Having worked on a number of rapid prototyping and quick reaction environments I realize that keeping up with customers that have a fast ops tempo and shifting focus can be a challenge. For that reason, I strongly agree with the author on the value of constant interaction with the customer and stakeholders, continuous builds, on-going testing and integration, teams being given wide latitude to focus on developing solutions and managers focusing on removing impediments. However, the author claims that these and other practices he discusses are unique to an agile development environment.

In my view, agile development represents just one confluence of best practices identified over many years and under different labels, such as rapid prototyping, joint application development, spiral development, Rational Unified Process (RUP), etc. While the author discusses these and other methodologies, I think his comparisons and contrasts with agile development are superficial. RUP, in particular, is not given its due as being an "agile" process and project management framework that can be used on different kinds of software projects.

I'm more of a middle of the road person. I tend to blend the strengths of many different approaches and when I read something that maximizes its strengths while exaggerating the weaknesses of other approaches, I tend to be skeptical. From my own experience with dynamic customer environments, I wonder if the author's description of agile development would lend itself to an EFFICIENT discovery of complex requirements. What's more efficient and agile, trying to code to "vague" requirements and continually coming back to the customer saying, "Is this the rock you wanted?" or holding some JAD sessions, getting with subject matter experts and prototyping aspects of the system that are not clearly understood? I'm not sure the author's description of agile development adds anything new to previous techniques for clarifying vague requirements or discovering unspoken requirements. It just takes a team of analysts, developers and stakeholders willing to work closely together, whether it be in the Elaboration phase of a RUP-based project, the 1st or 2nd iteration phase on a rapid-prototyping project or (get this) even in the requirements analysis phase of a traditional life cycle project.

Also, to me, the notion of "stories", "epics" and "themes" represent unnecessarily relabeled and watered-down versions of more mature UML techniques that model system structure, behavior and human-system and system-to-system interaction. To his credit, the author did spend time discussing the application of use cases which are easily implmented graphically and textually in UML.

While the author does bring together a number of concepts that are useful for running a project, he doesn't make the case that agile development, as a whole, is a major departure from conventional practices, but I like adding some of the "tools" he discussed to my toolbelt.

One fourth of the book is devoted to the usual waterfall badgering. Another fourth to motherhood statements about agile practices. Another fourth to simplistic ideas about project selection and resource planning. And another fourth to mmm..., what was the last fourth about?

A reference book no professional herbalist can be without

As an avid reader (and writer) of books on herbal medicine, I have to say that Blumenthal, Goldberg, and Brinckmann's Herbal Medicine is simply the most authoritative reference for the use of Western herbs on the market today. Herbal Medicine--Expanded Commission E Monographs augments the "gold standard" of scientifically oriented herbal therapy, the Commission E Monographs, with histories, in-depth and comprehensive discussions of scientific research, color photos, and practical recommendations for the use of herbs in therapy, some of which are to be found in no other book. While the tone of the book is academic and the scientific complexity of the subject matter may scare away some potential readers, anyone who uses any of the herbs most commonly available in the USA today can profit by referring to this book.

Missing extremely important information

I am a clinical professor in a school of pharmacy and am admittedly biased toward traditional "western" medicine. However, any objective person would have to agree that there are major "gaps" in the information this book provides. In the section on St. John's wort, this book states that there are no known contraindications or drug interactions with St. John's wort. There are in fact serious drug interactions with this product, including anti-rejection drugs (resulting in at least one case of organ rejection in a renal transplant patient) and potentially fatal interactions with other anti-depressants (most importantly MAOIs). This book has extensive information on historical use of herbs, pharmacology and uses... but lacks important safety information. No clinician should use this book as his/her sole source of information on herbal products.

These texts, written in both Latin and Irish, constitute an adventurous and productive experiment in staging confrontations between the written and the spoken, the Christian and the pagan. The early Irish literati, primarily clerics living within a monastic milieu, produced literature that included saints' lives, heroic sagas, law tracts, and other genres. They sought to invest their literature with an authority different from that of the traditions from which they borrowed, native and foreign. To achieve this goal, they cast many of their texts as the outcome of momentous dialogues between saints and angelic messengers or remarkable interviews with the dead, who could reveal some insight from the past that needed to be rediscovered by forgetful contemporaries. Conversing with angels and ancients, medieval Irish writers boldly inscribed their visions of the past onto the new Christian order and its literature. Nagy includes portions of the original Latin and Irish texts that are not readily available to scholars, along with full translations.

Nagy's insights shine brightly over a sea of controversy

Today, scholars debate the question: what was the real source of the tales about pagan heroes and pre-Christian deities that Irish monks recorded in medieval times? Was the primary source the pre-Christian oral tradition with its Celtic culture and Indo-European roots? Or were the monastic scribes primarily influenced by the Latin sources they acquired from the Continent and Mideast, such as Biblical apocrypha and works of philosophy and nature by authors like Isidore of Seville? Professor Nagy brings to the controversy his careful study of the imagery and motifs used by the monks, showing how the same motifs and treatments were used to recount both saints' lives and hero tales. There are no final answers to the controversy here, but Nagy's insights and scholarship bring clarity to the discussion. NOTE: Readers should have at least some familiarity with the Irish stories.

In an engaging hybrid of scientific inquiry and personal discovery, Robertson, who teaches psychology at Trinity College in Dublin and has worked as science correspondent for the London Times, examines the functioning of the human brain. Presenting his ideas with energy, humor and clarity, Robertson's argument that "life sculpts your brain" runs counter to a fairly recent trend in brain research that assumes most, if not all, human behavior is already "hard-wired" through evolution and genetics. Instead, Robertson claims there are many ways we can all "sculpt" our own realities by knowing how to exercise our brains in certain ways, thus affecting the "patterns of connections between neurons." For example, education actually builds stronger connections between brain cells, according to Robertson, as neurons fire within the "trembling web" (the 100 billion brain cells that "make up 'you'"). Retirement and lassitude, on the other hand, can diminish the number and strength of these connections. To support his central point that "cells that fire together, wire together," Robertson draws mostly upon clinical case studies. In several chapters, he portrays an intriguing cross-section of the population who have experienced abnormal relations between brain and body (e.g., phantom limbs) or who have severe memory blockages. In other chapters, Robertson discusses the effects of trauma, fear and hatred on the brain's neural connections. His theory about the power we all possess to shape our own life experiences has far-reaching implications for all aspects of society, including the treatment of illness, education, the workplace and human relationships. Robertson (psychology, Trinity Coll., Dublin) has served as a science correspondent for several London newspapers, is a frequent contributor to science and medical journals, and has authored several books on neurorehabilitation. Here, he describes the brain's "trembling web," in which synapses can form stronger connections as a result of repeated and coordinated firing of neurons. Experience, he argues, can literally change brain structure. His two key principles are aptly phrased, "cells that fire together, wire together" and "when cells fire apart, wires depart." Learning, therefore, sculpts the brain and affects the complexity and number of dendrites on the neurons. Robertson explains how mental imagery can modify the brain, how paying attention to experience is critical for sculpting to occur, and how physical and mental activity can temper the effects of age on the brain. He also makes a strong case for the role of environment in the development of emotional and intellectual intelligence. Robertson uses analogies liberally and skillfully to illustrate these processes. This first-rate study of the workings of the brain is required reading for anyone interested in how advertisers influence consumers, how mental exercise can improve both mental and physical performance or how parents can stimulate mental activity in their young children. That probably doesn't leave out many curious readers. Starting with a basic explanation of how the brain initially forms, Ian H. Robertson logically proceeds into his explanation of mind sculpting, which is nothing less than the process through which the mind is continuously evolving. His treatment of the staggeringly complex topic is surprisingly accessible, enabling you to make the intuitive leaps from biological detail to the practical manifestations of these phenomena without handholding. Tosses out the old, negative myths about the brain

This is an excellent book about the latest research on brain structure, and perhaps the best thing about the newest information is how hopeful it is. Robertson shows that your brain is what you make of it, day by day. We can make new patterns and neural pathways in our brain all the way through old age, simply by putting new demands on it. This book is must reading for anyone who was depressed by the idea that their brain stopped growing and started dying at age 15. If you keep on using your brain, it will keep on growing.

Excellent summary of recent, direct explorations of how the brain works, such how it learns, and the implications of such knowledge to individuals, schools, governments, societies, and human evolution. The examples are fascinating. The writing, by a person of deep knowledge of his subject, is efficient, humble, and, at times, humerous, The author has successfully made some important, liberating, and inspiring information accessible to general readership.

Career Development and Counseling: Putting Theory and Research to Work

Within this book, the authors made great attempts to include variables that confront individuals as they seek to either pursue or change careers. They offered various theoretical perspectives in which one can identify where they are and understand where they are going or would like to go by isolating their interest, values, and personality type which could result in success. This success can be where they are now or where they end up.

They also emphasized the life span of a person taking into consideration various roles each person will hold at differing times but how to maneuver through those phases successfully.

The authors also incorporated the various theoretical perspectives strengths and weaknesses as they relate to how inclusive or effective they are with other cultures, gender, and ethnic groups.
