Should have been called womanhood 101!

Ladies, God has given us this wonderful gift....our femininity. Michelle McKinney Hammond does it once again (and you wonder why she is my favorite!) in The Power of Femininity. This book is full of practical principles about how to use what God has given us in the proper place. Michelle has showed the power women have to shape cities, states and nations. The power of influence is a powerful thing. It's not flirting or "putting your self out there;" it's living the way God created a woman to be. Michelle will challenge your thinking about womanhood. The Reconversion of the Feminine Spirit

This book was so powerful and such an inspiration to me. This book addressed every woman regardless of where they are in their lives. In this book, Michelle talks alot about how we relate to men regardless of where we are in our lives. She reinforces the need for us to respect and honor men in general. She shows us how to utilize what God has given us as women, such as the power of influence. She discusses the proper use of it and the improper use of it, which is manipulation. The book is phenomenal. I found myself crying and repenting while I was reading it. One of my most enjoyable segments of this book was when she addressed the Christian, Single, Professional woman. She talks about us wearing these self-sufficient attitudes on our shoulders and that being all that men see when they meet us, when men indeed have a need to be needed. This blessed me because God had already begun to deal with me on presenting the beauty of who I am to a man and not all of my accomplishments. It was certainly confirmation. While she addressed the need for us to be submissive and honor men, she balances this by addressing the need for single women and married women to stop rescuing men and allow them to be men. She even addresses motherhood and women in leadership positions. The bottom line is that we can be ladies and feminine regardless of what situations we encounter.

Inspiring

From the very beginning of the book, I know that I was in class with the counseling spirit of God. I was so impressed with the subjects and how they fit into my life and into many lives of people I associate with. I know that this book is annointed to bring about change and a peace about making new decisions that bring honor and glory to God. I thank Michelle for having the grace to print it. I am sending it to about 5 people for Christmas. I believe that it is a seed that I will plant into some lives and God will supply all the nutrients needed to save some marriages and even change how single women see themselves. A MUST READ

About the Author
Larry J. Siegel was born in the Bronx in 1947. While living on Jerome Avenue and attending City College of New York (CCNY) in the 1960s, he was swept up in the social and political currents of the time. He became intrigued with the influence contemporary culture had on individual behavior: Did people shape society or did society shape people? He applied his interest in social forces and human behavior to the study of crime and justice. After graduating from CCNY, he attended the newly opened program in criminal justice at the State University of New York at Albany, earning both his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees there. After completing his graduate work, Dr. Siegel began his teaching career at Northeastern University, where he was a faculty member for nine years. After leaving Northeastern, he held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire. He then taught in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell for more than 26 years. Now a Professor Emeritus, he continues to teach online courses. Dr. Siegel has written extensively in the area of crime and justice, including books on juvenile law, delinquency, criminology, criminal justice, and criminal procedure. He is a court certified expert on police conduct and has testified in numerous legal cases.

Crim Just student, good resource

I enjoyed how easy the text is to read and it has concepts in bold etc. It was very informative and covered the material very well. lots of resources from the publisher were helpful too. I did however feel like the text was written like a High School text book, and didn't seem to be advanced enough for a college course. but regardless it was a good resource for my criminology class

As far as Textbooks go...

This is actually a really good textbook. I'm not so fond of reading most of my college books but this one is interesting and not nearly as boring as most. Though I wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't the required book for my course.

Too much highlighting

I'm only rating the book a three because of the highlighting. I received it in record time but somebody got a little too happy with the highlighter. For instance, the page numbers and the page topic by the page numbers have been highlighted. Every page has highlighting on it. But other that that the book is in pretty good condition.

Not the book about Arab Spring

I was looking forward to reading a good book on events in the Middle East in 2011 and 2012 and I was attracted to this book for two reasons: the first is obviously because of its title "Arab Spring", so you cannot go wrong if this is what you want to read about. The second is almost my blind trust in every book that comes out from Zed Books. However, I regret to say that I was very disappointed. The author delves into a very lengthy monologue about cultural analysis from every corner of the western canon which takes a fair deal of the pages of the book. If you take off all the material about Iran and its supposedly 2009 spring, the remainder is a thin account of the "Arab Spring". My disappointment did not end here. I was wondering all the time when reading the more relevant sections about the Arab context why would Zed Books publish such a book: the author generously helps himself every few pages to material from Al Jazeera website which it seems he strongly believes in its credibility. The same goes for material from CNN. Moreover, there is pretension to objectivity while the book sails safely around the roles played by Qatar and Saudi in the events and that fact that Al-Jazeera championed Islamist militants everywhere did not bother him. Worst still is his continued enthusiasm that what happened in Cairo and Tunis are signs of big things to happen in the world, comparing them to great events of history. His attack on the Arab Left and his glorification of Fawaz Traboulsi and Azmi Bechara as the greates Arab intellectuals alive betrays his biases and preferences. One will not find serious critqiue of the roles of the United States or the West or Turkey or Saudi, etc., in the "Arab Spring", partly because the author lacks insights and skills into the economic/political and strategic dimensions of the crises, and stays safely in his cultural studies domain.
It was a great relief to finish reading this book (since I spent money to buy it) and I am glad to give it away to charity. I should credit the author with his effort to search for articles and books, which I plan to look up, and I cannot deny that there were passages that I enjoyed. His English prose is good and for that I grant him one star.

While the book is at times theoretically and empirically weak, there are a few sections that deserve attention. As convincingly contended by Dabashi, 'The postcolonial did not overcome the colonial; it exacerbated it by negation. The Arab Spring has overcome both'.

This, as other reviewers have shown is a pathetic attempt to justify the slaughter of minorities, moderates and secularists across the Middle East. Let's see what one of his fan club said: "This book of Hamid Dabashi is one of the best on the currents event in the Middle East and is very easy to read. I really like the way he tries to rely on the Arab Sring as a new political geography which has link with Occupy Wall Street, the Quebec Spring and other stuggle in the public space worldwide". Occupy Wall Street? Did they chop heads off New York minorities? Quebec? Do they gang rape teenagers there in the name of revolutionary springs? Do Quebec separatists eat the organs of their enemies? No? Well don't compare them to those who have invaded Syria at the behest of Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
Although many of the author's thoughts on Israel and America's terror campaign against Iran are well-reasoned, he is too entwined in his own theoretical wonderlands to have any worthwhile views on the ongoing massacre of Arabs by GCC funded psychotics.

I enjoyed this book and had a hard time getting up a couple of mornings , do to late nite reading and not wanting to put the book down...I like the fact that you can read one situation seeing it from how Sherrelle experience it, into a rewind of the same situation but now throu Marlin's eyes...every sex scene had me hot...And if this book was to become a movie...wouldn't Katt Williams play the perfect Dahji???

This novel, started off slowly introducing us to the main characters,Marlin the injured pro-fotballer and his sexy unfufilled neighbour Sherrelle(did I mention she's married) and a host of naughty supporting characters Peaches her pole riding best friend who is all about her paper and Duji a thirsty sport agent with a hidden life and secret agenda .The story really gets going when Sherelle stumbles on Marlin sexin his cold,calculating wif e.This book had me turning pages and laughing loud at some of the madness they got themselves into. The story, races from there into a whirlwind of passion,deception and shocking revelations leaving you hot bothered and waiting for part two!The church -lady cover didn't do it for me but if you like well written erotica BE SURE TO GET "A NEIGHBOURLY AFFAIR"!!

This book turned out to be much better than I'd thought. Unfortunately, I don't think it's doing as well as it should. I've spoken to other readers who also enjoy the book and feel that the cover and the synopsis is the reason why many people are not buying it.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys something erotic and a good laugh.

About the Author
Oscar Gonzalez is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Texas. His research interests cover computational and applied mathematical problems related to the large-scale deformations of thin rods and ribbons, and more general three-dimensional bodies. He has contributed articles to numerous journals across mathematics, engineering and chemistry. His current research efforts are directed toward understanding the mechanical properties of DNA at various length scales.

Andrew Stuart is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Warwick. His general research interests cover computational stochastic processes and dynamical systems and his current research efforts are directed mainly towards problems at the interface of applied mathematics and statistics. He has contributed articles to numerous journals across mathematics, engineering and physics and is the recipient of six prizes for his work in Applied Mathematics.

I wish I had this book earlier

This book went above and beyond my expectations for a step 1 review resource. It takes just about all the material in First Aid and explains it in easy to understand/quick to read paragraph form, which is exactly what I need to review subjects that I haven't covered in well over a year.

Obviously First Aid has "everything" you need to know but for me the cluster of random words tossed together were not enough, especially for subjects that I am weak in. For example, the neurology chapter in First Aid is a nightmare to go through without prior knowledge and my neuroscience/neuropath courses at my school (US allopathic) were subpar at best. After reading the neurology chapter, I'm getting more than 90% of neuro questions correct in Uworld.

I think to use this book best you should follow along with your classes, but I'm finding it to be extremely helpful right now studying for boards. I really wish I had this book sooner.

I scored very competitively on boards, thought I would share my thoughts on this book.
I do love this book. If anyone has gone through UWorld, the explanation quality of this book is on similar caliber. If you read first aid, you will be scratching your head asking "why" or "how" does this disease process happen? This book goes into explaining a lot of the why's. It also has phenomenal illustrations, taken from medical textbooks such as Robbins/Costanzo's Physiology. I really appreciated how the authors went through major textbooks and borrowed tons of illustrations.Granted, while they "teach" the disease, they are almost forced to provide less breadth overall. Some disease processes are missing entirely or high yield facts are not mentioned. That is why this book will never be a First Aid replacement, and really I don't think that should be the purpose of this book. This book should be used along side First Aid. I annotated important explanation points into my First Aid book, and near my exam just paged through the beautiful pages/images. Definitely got a question right on my exam that I would have missed if I only used First Aid.

The main weak point of this book is pharmacology. There simply is not enough info in the pharm sections, or drugs are missing entirely. First Aid does this section relatively well.

I don't know where this book fits in the overall plethora of board prep material. It is a gem for people who enjoy explanations, the pictures are beautiful, and the pages are thick (not flimsy like First Aid). I would never say Crush is necessary to do well on boards (I would say First Aid is), but for people who do not appreciate the shotgun blast of high yield facts that is First Aid, they might find Crush easier to digest.

I have no idea why Crush hasn't become more popular

I am a 2nd year US medical student currently in the process of studying for the USMLE step 1. I cannot praise Crush Step 1 highly enough as an integral text in my preparation. I do think that FA+Uworld (and perhaps pathoma) are critical and necessary, but I desired a foundation of concepts and principles to understand the list of facts that abound in FA. For example, I could not remember from back in 1st year why low volume status caused a metabolic alkalosis just by reading FA, but Crush explained the physiology behind a contraction alkalosis in a very succinct fashion, and I soon found it much easier to remember the laundry list of facts in FA. Moreover, as I am taking Uworld questions, and when I find myself not remembering specific details, I can often reason through the question by remembering key explanations or figures from the Crush text. This book is much more concise and oriented towards Step 1 knowledge than another review book I used, then stopped using due to its poor organization and low quality writing (basic sciences review books by FA publishers).

I would recommend using this book in adjunct with FA, either reading a given section before tackling the same section in FA, or vice versa, using FA as a primer to see what you lack in understanding, and allow Crush to fill in the conceptual holes. Importantly, Crush draws from classic texts for almost all of their images (such as Robbins, Boron Physiology, Costanzo, Guljan, etc.) so their examples are likely to be representative of what you will see on the actual exam. And they do not overload you with too many details, isn't that what FA is for anyways?

Buy this book if you value the following:
--a companion text to FA, something that will explain concepts rather than just serve as a list of facts to review.
--a well written, easy-to-follow review that integrates many key areas of your first 2 years of medical school.
--If you feel that Qbank explanations are not sufficient to fill in the holes from FA

I am increasingly impressed with the quality of this book as I use it more each day. And the errata is so minor (posted on their facebook) that it makes you realize they actually spent a lot of time caring about the quality of the text.
