Great thinker on an interesting subject.
By Matthew Rapaport
Loved the content, but Kindle format for this book (like his "Philosophy of Space and Time") is terrible!

When Einstein formulated the general theory of relativity, he transformed gravity into geometry. That was but one of the big insights of relativity, but it is the one that most matters here. In the few decades following GR's 1915 debut (Eddington wrote this in 1920) a number of physicists (Eddington among them) thought that if gravity can be mapped to geometry, perhaps the electro-magnetic force could be also? These were the first attempts at a "unified theory" of all physical forces, and in this book, Eddington explicates his particular version of it. In the end, the attempts all failed, but the literature is valuable none-the-less. Eddington is a very good writer and his explanation of the relation between gravity and space-time curvature is worth the read.

That's the good news. The bad news is that this Kindle edition is very poorly constructed. There is some math here, but it is impossible to follow any of it (even if you are otherwise qualified to do so) because every special mathematical symbol used in logic and physics has been mis-transformed. Even pi, not to mention any super or sub-script, integration and summation symbols, etc. In short, every single symbol is scrambled into ordinary characters and thereby rendered unreadable. I assume the physical copies are all ok in this regard, but the Kindle version came out horribly!

Even if you just want to see what the man has to say and would ignore the math anyway, there is some effort to be made. For example there is no separation between pages and their end notes (of which there are plenty). The notes end up falling in the middle of the page looking like ordinary paragraphs. Luckily they can be spotted thanks to a preceding '*' and you learn to read these and then, in the next line, continue with the previous text.

All in all I found Dr. Eddington's style an enjoyable read, but the formatting issues make the Kindle version a bit problematic.

Great learning from one of the greatest of modern astronome
By Raghuram Krishnaswamy
First off, this is the guy who made the famous remark when he was asked "Is it true you are among the three people who understand relativity" and he responded, "I wonder who is the third!". The Astronomer Royal, Eddington was counted on as a very good mathematician by even mathematicians (Hardy for instance) and an even better physicist. He was embroiled (now legend) with Chandrasekhar in the thirties on the quantum mechanics of dying stars. Chandra worked extensively with Eddington and described his writing style in glowing terms.
When he writes, you don't get the feeling of pomp in his style, considering his stature. On the contrary his style is very engaging and leaves you impressed! His mathematical treatment to the relativity is even more accessible!
Fantastic Book!!!!

The first lay classic on general relativity
By W Kowalsky
One of the most famous astronomers of the 20th century, Arthur Eddington, was so enamored by Einstein's theory of gravitation that he took up the crusade by measuring the deflection of starlight by the sun and thus was the first experimentalist to verify a vital part of the theory.

He believed Einstein's creation to be a beautiful geometrical theory which should be at least qualitatively understood by everyone. The result of this belief was "Space, Time and Gravitation" which was written for the intelligent educated lay person.

The book is well written and insightful and I heartily recommend it.

Living as a Lesbian, by Cheryl Clarke

Living as a Lesbian is Cheryl Clarke’s paean to lesbian life. Filled with sounds from her childhood in Washington, DC, the riffs of jazz musicians, and bluesy incantations, Living as a Lesbian sings like a marimba, whispering “i am, i am in love with you.”

Living as a Lesbian chronicles Clarke’s years of literary and political activism with anger, passion, and determination. Clarke mourns the death of Kimako Baraka (“sister of famous artist brother”), celebrates the life of Indira Gandhi, and chronicles all kinds of disasters—natural and human-made. The world is large in Living as a Lesbian but also personal and intimate. These poems are closely observed and finely wrought, with Clarke’s characteristic charm and wit shining throughout.

In 1986, Living as a Lesbian captured the vitality and volatility of the lesbian world; today, in a world both changed and unchanged, Clarke’s poems continue to illuminate our lives and make new meanings for Living as a Lesbian.

Poetic pyrotechnics from a radical voice
By Michael J. Mazza
"Living As a Lesbian" is a stunning collection of poetry by Cheryl Clarke. As the title indicates, much of the book's content revolves around loving and surviving as a lesbian in the 20th century. Clarke also writes about racism and injustice, and reflects upon the people and events of her world. Much of the book has a gritty, urban flavor to it.
In the poem "wearing my cap backwards," Clarke writes, "poets are among the first witches / so suffer none to live." This sets the tone for her poetic style: edgy, dangerous, and allied with the most marginalized elements of society. As she explores her subjects--lesbian sex, racially biased courtrooms, recreational drug use, road kill, and more--Clarke uses language that is alternatingly lusty, playful, profane, enraged, and/or outraged.
Some of the most memorable selections from "Living As a Lesbian" include "living as a lesbian on the make," which narrates the adventure of a lesbian in a "straight" bar; "Indira," an irony-laden reflection on the life and public image of Indian leader Indira Gandhi; and "sexual preference," a humorous meditation on lesbian sexual practices.
As Clarke spins her poetic webs, she ensnares many public figures: Jesse Jackson, Anita Bryant, Vanessa Williams, and more. Her vision is international, multi-cultural, and unbound by time: "i hear a marimba player chanting / her slave song in portuguese" (from "marimba"). As in her other books, Clarke finds a wealth of inspiration in African-American culture and history.
In the poem entitled "living as a lesbian underground: a futuristic fantasy," Clarke writes, "Leave signs of struggle. / Leave signs of triumph." This book, along with Clarke's other volumes of poetry, contains powerful signs of both struggle and triumph on the part of a remarkable poet.

maybe too mature..?
By Dorothy Dandridge
I have to say that I was disappointed by the poetry in this collection. I thought I would like to write poetry and i wanted to read more about the lesbian lifestlye. All of the poems did not relate to lesbians, and the stly of writing did nothing for me. Possibly, I am not cultured enough or old enough to enjoy it.

Sebastian Mallaby on Hedge Funds

I set out to write the history of hedge funds for two reasons. Explaining the most secretive subculture of our economy posed an irresistible investigative challenge; and the common view of hedge funds seemed ripe for correction. Hedge funds were generally regarded as the least stable part of the financial system. Yet they managed risk better than banks, investment banks, insurers, and so on—and they did so without a safety net from taxpayers.

Four years on, the book is done; and both my original motivations have been vindicated. Unearthing the story of hedge funds has been pure fun: From the left-wing anti-Nazi activist , A. W. Jones, to the irrepressible cryptographer, Jim Simons, the story of hedge funds is packed full of larger than life characters. Getting my hands on internal documents from George Soros’s Quantum Fund; visiting Paul Tudor Jones and reading the eureka emails he wrote in the middle of the night; poring over the entire set of monthly letters that the Julian Robertson wrote during the twenty year life of his Tiger fund; interviewing Stan Druckenmiller, Louis Bacon, and hundreds of other industry participants: my research has yielded a wealth of investment insights, as well as an understanding of why governments frequently collide markets. Meanwhile, the financial crisis of 2007-2009 vindicated my hypothesis that hedge funds are the good guys in finance. They came through the turmoil relatively unscathed, and never took a cent of taxpayers’ money.

Since the book has come out, many readers have posed the skeptical question: Do hedge funds really make money systematically? The answer is an emphatic yes; and without giving the whole book away, I can point to a couple of reasons why hedge funds do outsmart the supposedly efficient market.

First, hedge funds often trade against people who are buying or selling for some reason other than profit. In the currency markets, for example, hedge funders such as Bruce Kovner might trade against a central bank that is buying its own currency because it has a political mandate to prop it up. In the credit markets, likewise, a hedge fund such as Farallon might trade against pension funds whose rules require them to sell bonds of companies in bankruptcy. It’s not surprising that hedge funds beat the market when they trade against governments and buy bonds from forced sellers.

Second, the hedge-fund structure makes people compete harder. There is an incentive to manage the downside: hedge-fund managers have their own money in their funds, so they lose personally if they take losses. There is an incentive to seek out the upside: hedge-fund managers keep a fifth of their funds’ profits. This combination explains why hedge funds were up in 2007, when most other investors were losing their shirts; it explains why they were down in 2008 by only half as much as the S&P 500 index. People sometimes suggest that hedge funds survived the subprime bubble by fluke—perhaps their ranks include wacky misfits who are naturally contrarian. But there is more to it than that. John Paulson poured $2 million in the research that gave him the conviction to bet against the bubble. The hedge-fund structure created the incentive to make that investment.

Financial risk is not going away. Currencies and interest rates will rise and fall; there will be difficult decisions about how to allocated scarce capital in a sophisticated and specialized economy. The question is who will manage this risk without demanding a taxpayer backstop. The answer is hiding in plain sight: To a surprising and unrecognized degree, the future of finance lies in the history of hedge funds.

Review
"This book has become the go-to reference for anyone interested in international migration, offering a comprehensive assessment of theories, data, patterns, and processes of immigration around the world. The fifth edition offers a fresh look at developments in the first decade of the 21st century. It belongs on the bookshelf of any serious student of immigration today."--Douglas S. Massey, PhD, Henry G. Bryant Professor of Sociology and Public Affairs, Princeton University "The Age of Migration has been the main textbook for migration studies since it first appeared in 1993; I have relied on it both as a resource for my own research and a text for my upper-division undergraduate and graduate courses on the politics of immigration. The fifth edition continues the excellent coverage of migration theories and history, the politics of immigration, and issues such as race and ethnicity, while bringing in new material on topics like the impact of climate change. The authors are to be commended for addressing critical issues in a time of global change."--Terri E. Givens, PhD, Department of Government, University of Texas at Austin

"In today's world on the move, it's hard to keep up with all that is changing. The Age of Migration, Fifth Edition, once again offers a comprehensive, creative roadmap to the migration field. The authors' historical perspective, regional focus, and policy-oriented approach make this an invaluable resource for beginning and advanced scholars alike."--Peggy Levitt, PhD, Department of Sociology, Wellesley College

"As international human mobility expands as a social force worldwide, The Age of Migration remains the only authoritative text on significant social, political, economic, and cultural trends in the field. The fifth edition is vital to understanding the rapidly transforming processes of international migration. More than ever, this book is de rigueur for introductory and advanced courses."--Immanuel Ness, PhD, Department of Political Science, Brooklyn College, City University of New York

Every edition of this by-now classic text on migration adds information on specific flows and gives us a more global perspective. I have used each of the prior editions in my teaching, and find this to be the most encompassing, useful, and well-conceptualized of all books with such broad coverage."--Saskia Sassen, PhD, Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology, Columbia University; author of Territory, Authority, Rights

"The strengths of previous editions…have been noted by reviewers and readers over the last decade and a half: a text which is authoritative yet eminently readable; a wide span of case studies from the main theatres of immigration around the world; an appropriate sense of history; useful maps...instructive tables and textboxes; an extensive bibliography, and a thorough index. The way the text is writtenwith a lack of jargon and with key concepts carefully explainedmakes it suitable for lay readers and especially valuable for undergraduates, but its wide range and authoritative voice make it equally useful as a primer for graduate students and ready reference for academics and migration experts." (on the fourth edition)

(Ethnic and Racial Studies 2010-11-01)

"A synthetic, widely ranging, and accessible account of international migration, which goes beyond the where, when, and why to speak to the complex ways in which migration changes society....The real contribution of this book is...its linking of migration and social change in a historic and constructive way." (on the first edition)

(Annals of the Association of American Geographers 2013-06-14)

"A lively volume that nicely weaves together the literatures on international migration and ethnic relations….This is an informative, stimulating overview of international migration and links with critical issues surrounding the emergence of multicultural societies. The book will appeal to a wide audience. It is written in a highly readable, fluid style….It is multidisciplinary in nature and could be used in a variety of instructional settings ranging from undergraduate courses to graduate seminars." (on the first edition)

Castles' 5th edition is a winner
By Susan Gzesh
Once again, in the 5th edition, Stephen Castles and his co-authors give a brilliant, global overview of patterns of migration and their underlying causes. This is both an excellent text for undergraduate or graduate students and a handy reference for scholars in the field. Written in a clear and well-organized manner, this book not only describes the causes and impacts of migration today but also places contemporary trends in their historical context.

This is the first time that Sir Arthur Bomber' Harris's own papers covering his three and a half years at Bomber Command have been published and made available to the general public. The book also contains an introduction by Sebastian Cox, an Air Staff Memorandum written immediately after the war and a revisionist German viewpoint by Horst Boog. It stands as a landmark in the controversy that still rages over the man who led Bomber Command's campaign in the Second World War.

Air Marshall Sir Arthur T. Harris and the Bombing of Germany
By Osher Doctorow, Ph.D.
Many of us remember Gregory Peck in 12 O'Clock High, a story of Command Bombing decisions over Germany. Reviewers of 12 O'Clock High, both the book and the movie, and perhaps even the authors, often confuse the hero with the American tactical leader(s). It was "Bomber Harris", later Air Marshall Sir Arthur T. Harris, who ordered the bombing of Germany in retaliation for the inhuman bombing of England by Hitler's Luftwaffe and rockets. He had to fight for that bombing not only against Americans who felt sorry for the Germans (not having experienced having their home towns bombed themselves, and somewhat under the spell of German sympathizers in our military), but against some important Nazi sympathizers in Great Britain. Like Montgomery (see my review of him), Harris has had his portrait rewritten by "politically correct" historians and novelists anxious to downplay the British contribution to victory over Germany. When I saw Gregory Peck in that movie for the first time, I was looking at Bomber Harris, struggling alone to give back what he and his people had received. Yes, German cities and villages were almost obliterated by that bombing. I can only say that a nation stupid enough to vote for Adolf Hitler because he had a nice voice and was handy at finding scapegoats, and stupid enough to commit massive genocide, deserved to receive back some of what they had done to others. Montgomery, Slim, Harris, Mountbatten. We need a few good men like them.

From an award-winning writer, the first linked history of African Americans and Latinos in Major League Baseball

After peaking at 27 percent of all major leaguers in 1975, African Americans now make up less than one-tenth--a decline unimaginable in other men's pro sports. The number of Latin Americans, by contrast, has exploded to over one-quarter of all major leaguers and roughly half of those playing in the minors. Award-winning historian Rob Ruck not only explains the catalyst for this sea change; he also breaks down the consequences that cut across society. Integration cost black and Caribbean societies control over their own sporting lives, changing the meaning of the sport, but not always for the better. While it channeled black and Latino athletes into major league baseball, integration did little for the communities they left behind.

By looking at this history from the vantage point of black America and the Caribbean, a more complex story comes into focus, one largely missing from traditional narratives of baseball's history. Raceball unveils a fresh and stunning truth: baseball has never been stronger as a business, never weaker as a game.

The Rise & Fall of the Great American Pastime in Black America
By dwood78
As a of person of color who enjoys baseball, it sadden me to see the sport be given the cold shoulder by Black America. In 1975, more than 1 out of 4 major league players were Black. Today, it's less than 1 out of 10, while the number of Latino players have skyrocketed.

This book explains what led to this. It gives a brief history of baseball in Black & Latin America communities pre-World War II before going in the rise of Jackie Robinson. The author believed that integration has played a part in the eventual fall of the sport in Black America. Prior to which, most Black players played in the Negro League & in with Black-owned teams. In the wake of Robinson's joining the then Brooklyn Dodgers, many major league teams began raiding the Negro League for the best players, leading to the decline of the Black-run league altogether. The book also goes into the Latin side of baseball with the short-lived Mexican Baseball League (which the MLB eventually succeeded in driving out of existence), & the rise of Latino players like Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente, who became the 1st great Latino player in the game.

Reading this book, I'm surprised to see a number of things Black players bought to the game like speed & base stealing-both which were very rarely done in the majors pre-integration that are now considered important parts of the game. The book also tries to explain the reasons that baseball has falling out of favor in Black America of which there are many besides integration, of which I'll not going to explain in this review (although MLB deserves some of the blame for this). Despite attends by the majors to reverse this trend, it may be too little too late. All in all, a great read. Well written & well researched. A must for those who want to understand the history of the game in the minority communities as well as the current state of the American pastime.

An interesting perspective
By David Freydkin
I finished Raceball today. I found the book very informative, especially for those interested in baseball history. Rob Ruck provides an explanation as to why baseball has declined in the black community. The historian also explains the decline of professional baseball leagues in places such as Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba.

Why has baseball almost died out amongst African Americans? Rob Ruck gives various reasons. One was the breaking of the color barrier by Jackie Robinson back in the 1940s. Prior to that, the Negro National League was popular amongst the community. Then, black baseball fans preferred to follow the Major Leagues and Robinson's progress there rather than the goings on in the NNL. In addition, the commercialization of baseball in the 1980s led to it being less of a community sport amongst blacks as more fans nationwide followed the MLB teams rather than local teams. In addition, per Rob Ruck, universities offered more lucrative scholarships for football and basketball, thereby leading to more black youth pursuing those sports instead.

Baseball still remains popular amongst the Latin community, especially amongst Dominicans and Puerto Ricans. However, professional leagues have strongly declined in Latin American countries where baseball is historically popular. That was also for various reasons. The fiercely patriotic Mexican millionaire Jorge Pasquel attempted to create a Mexican league to rival the MLB. However, the MLB won the competition due to better funding as well as instituting rules making it more challenging for Americans to play in the Mexican league. In addition, MLB franchises created baseball academies in Caribbean islands, especially the Dominican Republic, which employed young baseball players to develop talent for the Major Leagues. As a result, professional teams were replaced by talent academies in those places.

Raceball, although not always a page turner, is certainly a good read.

A different and valuable perspective
By maigre
Before reading Raceball, I thought that there were two eras in baseball, before Jackie Robinson and after. That's true, from a certain perspective. But there are other perspectives, too, which Rob Ruck illuminates engagingly in this history that discusses the social and business aspects of the Negro Leagues, Caribbean baseball and their local cultures along with what became of them and their leaders in the aftermath of the integration of the major leagues. Yes, Jackie Robinson is a pivotal and admirable character in US history. But there's much more to the story than the heroism of Jackie and Branch Rickey, a continuum that the events surrounding 1947 are a part of, but far from all of. Accordingly, Robinson and Rickey are characters in, but not the centerpieces of, this story about race and baseball.

There were thriving Negro and Latin leagues in the US and the Caribbean before the major leagues were integrated. Those communities provided team owners, supporting businesses, stadiums, restaurants, hotels, radio, newspaper coverage and much more. These institutions were integral to the health and identity of the local communities. Ruck fills us in on this world and its lively characters along with some relevant bits of social history. When the majors began to let non-white players in, those leagues withered away in short order. Along with them went those businesses, subcultures and meaningful places in the world for a lot of people. While much was gained by integrating the major leagues, valuable things were lost in the process. The road to progress leaves destruction in its wake. Thankfully, Ruck vividly records for us what was there before that sea change occurred.

The hardships of the early black and Latin players in the majors have been much documented, but Ruck fills us in on what became of the entrepreneurs and baseball people who are left to find roles in the new world. And there are plenty of interesting stories about players of that era, too.

Of course it's a great thing that athletes once locked out of the "mainstream" system now have the opportunity to make millions and that we, as fans, get to enjoy the benefits of the best players competing in a highly visible league. But it's valuable to know the history behind it all, no small part of which is that members of the marginalized communities ran thriving businesses, leagues and sub-cultures, often negotiating deals with the major league teams of the time and capably providing jobs and entertainment for lots of people, even rivaling major league interest at times.

If you're interested in the broader world of baseball and its history, do yourself a favor and read this book. It'll change the way you see the game.

An absolute gem, still relevant
By A. Kovaleski
This book is a now-obscure gem. A wonderful book about engineering a compiler rather than theorising about one. Bought it in 1979. Devoured it, couldn't put it down. Later wrote various small compilers over the years (even recently) in C and C++ using Mr Bornat's techniques. He doesn't teach you the most modern most powerful optimisation (it was 1979 after all) but the bangs-per-buck is tremendous. BTW you can read it online, just google author and title. Warning BCPL takes a moment to get but any hardcore C programmer should have little trouble.

A very practical and useful book on the subject.
By anon2001
This is one of a few computer science books that remains rather

special to me. I began learning about LALR(1) parsing and code

generation from this book. It and a small book on YACC were

enough to enable me to write a compiler for a 4GL. I have since

seen many other good (and not so good) books but this is a

personal favourite. It is full of practical advice while

maintaining a high standard of scholarship and provided a good

introduction to the subject.

The best explanation of parsing without Greek ever.
By A Customer
I'm a great fan of the first edition of this book(circa 1980). It explains the mechanics of parsing ratherthan just throwing a lot of math and proofs at the reader (e.g. Aho, Hopcroft or Ullman). You come away feeling that you could actually write a compiler. One caution: the figures in the first edition contained many errors. Let's hope they've been fixed in the new edition.
