Good Beginner's Book But Not So Musical
By Earthroamer
Although these studies are targetted for the beginners, some pieces aren't very musical, which may make the process of practising less enjoyable. However, the variety of basic fingerings and position-shifts does make it a good starting book for beginners.

Even my very young level students are very much involved in these studies. They strengthen the bowing and the note-reading very fast. This is a method that I have used for years.

A fantasy of history and the imagination
By Michael J. Edelman
Do you remember climbing trees, as a child? When I was a child, our neighborhood was full of giant elms that grew into a massive arch that turned our street into a leafy tunnel. I'd climb up on the lower branches, and dream about being brave enough to climb to the very top of the tree.I imagined building tree houses, where my friends I I could camp out high in the trees, our own special places where grownups were not allowed.

Italo Calvino imagines Cosimo, a boy from a family of minor nobles of the late 18th Century who one day takes to the trees in an act of rebellion against his family, vowing never to set foot on the Earth again. He keeps his promise, traveling to foreign lands, falling in love, corresponding with Voltaire and Diderot and other great minds of his day, participating in the intellectual and the revolutionary movements. Cosimo's younger brother narrates the story of how the young baron took to the trees, and what became of him.

Italo Calvino uses his gifts in storytelling and description to create a world in which a preposterous notion becomes commonplace. The most preposterous characters and events can seem ordinary as Calvino describes them. Cosimo's mother, a German woman known as "the Generalessa," spend her time doing embroidery, but not of the sort you'd expect. "The lace and embroidery were usually in the designs of geographical maps; our mother would stretch them over cushions or tapestry and stick in pins and tiny flags, showing the disposition of battles in the Wars of Succession, which she knew by heart..."

There is also Battista, the sister of Cosimo and our narrator, "a kind of stay at home nun," confined to the castle after a questionable encounter with a young noble, who dresses in a nun's wimple and takes her revenge on the family by preparing exquisite yet inedible dishes. Cosimo's uncle (the illegitimate brother of the Duke) dresses in Turkish robes and a fez and busies himself looking after the legal affair of the family and making complex plans for canals and hydraulic systems that will never be built. Next door is a family with whom Cosimo's family has been feuding, and they have a young daughter- but beyond that you'll have to read the book for yourself.

This is Calvino at his best, the teller of fabulous tales and a crafter of exquisite sentences who can catapult the reader far up into the trees, and beyond.

A parable disquised as an intellecual exercise, or is it?
By C. Collins
Never underestimate Italo Calvino, for what you think you are reading may turn out to be something else entirely from your original impressions. That is the case with the relatively short novel, The Baron in the Trees. It is true that I found it enchanting in the beginning and several chapters captured that enchantment, but there are sections that seem totally irrelevant to the plot and by the time I finished the book, I realized it really had no plot. It is an intellectual exercise disguised as a parable. Or is it a long parable disguised as an intellectual exercise? It offers an alternative reality based on our historic reality. Calvino takes an illogical premise that a young man decides at age 12 to life the rest of his life in the trees, and then constructs a world of detail around that premise, thus keeping the reader in a state of suspension. The narrator is the younger brother to the Baron who observes and relates to us what he sees, what he interprets, and sometimes the inner motivations of the other characters. It is the love affair between Cosimo, the Baron in the trees, and Viola, his childhood girlfriend and adult lover that is the peak or climax of the story for all energy and action leads to this point and the recedes from their affair. Despite the young narrator observations and interpretations, the Baron remained a mystery for me and I finally came to the conclusion that he is the ultimate outsider, the one who sees all human society and social constructions from a philosophical distance. Yet, it is passion an love for Viola that causes Cosimo to lose the perspective of the outsider and to be bound in his passions and desires. The character of Viola is fascinating for as a child she pits boy against boy and as a woman she pits man against man. Yet Calvino has a fascinating interpretation of why she uses jealous against the man she loves most in her life. Enough said, for this is a critical part of the book I don't want to spoil for other readers. It is a long parable about choosing to be an outsider, to look at the reset of humanity from a distance, and yet to be bound by the human passions that bound all of us. It is a long parable because there is much in human existence to explore. About every five pages Calvino offers a charming and sometimes enchanting comment or observation or description that reveals him to be the master of irony and abstraction. If you are ready for an author to play games with your expectations, read it.

What Is Not Sacred?: African Spirituality, by Laurenti Magesa

Did Christianity replace traditional African religion with the arrival of European missionaries in past centuries? Or did sub-Saharan African cultures persist in maintaining their religious worldviews even after accepting the salvific message of Christianity? In this compelling book, noted scholar Laurenti Magesa argues that despite missionary Christianity s refusal to acknowledge the worth of traditional African religious culture, the incarnational spirituality of those cultures remains vibrant and visible today, and has much to offer and teach other cultures, both Christian and not. When we admit that, in fact, all is sacred, we are challenged to reevaluate our relationships with each other, with other cultures, with God, and with the environment.

Divided into two parts, Magesa s book first explores how traditional African spirituality plays out in human understanding and influences relationships between human beings and their environment. In the second half of the book, he connects traditional African spirituality with life today, showing its value for interreligious dialogue, political governance, the quest for peace and justice, and Christian spirituality in a globalized world.

An amazing combination
By Andrew John Fialko
The FF have no choice but to enlist Peter Parker: The Amazing Spiderman!

After the supposed death of Jonathan Storm: The Human Torch, the FF can't manage without him. They have tried with Logan (Wolverine), Natasha Romanova (Black Widow), and even Victor Von Doom (Dr. Doom).

Now for the ultimate combination of action, mystery, and failure, to create a "Clash of the Heroes" edition of Fantastic Four!

THE WORLD'S GREATEST COMIC MAGAZINE IS BACK !!.
By Ian Moodie
I've been a big fan of THE FANTASTIC FOUR comic for over thirty-five years...The adventures of these marvel super heroes really got me hooked. It is easily my favourite comic !!. Can you imagine my utter suprise and disappointment when news broke that THE HUMAN TORCH would be killed and the title would be cancelled !!??. It was done...but deep in the recesses of my mind I just keep expecting, wishing and hoping that THE FANTASTIC FOUR will return...because the marvel universe is not the same without it!!...and to my stunning suprise it did !! with the milestone # 600th, 50th anniversary spectacular !!. 100 pages of pure excitement in multiple stories..The main one.."WHATEVER HAPPENED TO JOHNNY STORM?" has sated my curiosity. "THE ARC" with the mighty GALACTUS is an intresting continuation of "THE GALACTUS SEED" saga which begun in the MIGHTY THOR comic..this is going to be a spectacle in upcoming issues of THE FANTASTIC FOUR...and of course there is a serious battle with the KREE, the INHUMANS ,and the FF are caught right in the middle..another buildup too. Overall, great artwork, great stories..I thought STAN LEE would make a presentation..The only drawback ,but it's ok..You know what...I'm real glad it's back and I'm on for the ride !!.If you are a fan..I know you're on too..Very highly recomended. I've gotten another issue as an investment !!. MAKE MINE MARVEL !!!.

A good selection, co-edited by a poet
By Emberek
One of the annoying things about the received opinion about the Romantic poets is the statement that there were exactly six of them--Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Keats, and Shelley. This pronouncement is usually delivered with equal conviction to assertions you usually hear only in the natural sciences--e.g., that there are three kinds of human muscle (cardiac, striated, and slow-flexing) and two kinds of stony drip-accreted icicles in caves (stalactites and stalagmites). Nor elsewhere in the area of literature do you quite hear that there were so many Russian realist novelists, so many French Symbolist poets, so many English medieval poets, etc. So it's something of a relief to read in the editors' introduction to the "Portable Romantic Poets" that American romantics are included as well, because poets don't just arrest their reading, as anthologizers usually arrest their selecting, at continental or national boundaries. It's also welcome to see the inclusion of poets who are sometimes left out because they might be felt to be minor or unpopular (Landor) or generically different (Burns) by anthologizers. This anthology is a welcome corrective to received wisdom about who actually qualifies as a Romantic. And the efficient introduction is a minor masterpiece of cultural exposition as well.

nice collection, provides context with poems
By ltp1
Far be it from me to critique these poets, but I can say something about this particular presentation. It's a handy little volume, with a several-page introduction providing historical context, and a several-page calendar of British and American poetry from 1750 to around 1850. The calendar doesn't just list poetry, it includes events like "Watt's steam engine patented" and "Lewis and Clark Expedition" as well as the publication of novels and music, so context is well established. At the back of the book is an index of poems by title and by first line, and there's a set of biographical notes on the poets.
If you want to know what romantic poetry's all about, take a look at this. I don't know how an English Lit Ph.D. would rate this book but I think it's a nice collection.

The overflow of spontaneous emotion recollected in tranquillity
By Shalom Freedman
The great defining moment of the Romantic movement in English poetry is generally considered the publication by Wordsworth and Coleridge of 'The Lyrical Ballads' in 1797. But the editors of this anthology take an earlier point of origin and begin with the great myth - master and singer of songs of innocence and experience, William Blake. They include in their anthology not simply English Romantic poets but also the Americans , Emerson and Thoreau( Transcendentalists) and Poe. They also include a number of minor, lesser known poets.

But what is most important is that they have most of the great definining poems of English Romantic Poetry, the great poems of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Keats.

There are of course as many definitions of Romanticism as there are of other key intellectual-historical concepts such as 'Nature' and 'Classicism' But one clear element is a new found emphasis on self, and subjectivity , the expression of the individual's feeling of the world. Wordsworth went to everyday life and language, to nature and the world of the ' simple people' he met in his countryside wanderings. Coleridge went to the world of myth and mystery, but they both provided in deeper ways whole worlds of feeling which were at times ' deeper than tears'.

An outstanding anthology of one of the most important 'movements' or ' periods' in the world- history of poetry.
