Poorly written and provides bad advice

I was forced to buy this book for my MBA studies, and worse than paying the ridiculous price asked for it, I had to endure reading it too. This book is very poorly written, sentences are strangely structured, with multiple repetitions and redundancies making for a very annoying reading. Besides that, the authors seem to hold 'managers' in very low esteem as far as their trustworthiness and their intellectual abilities which is further irritating. To top it all off, they also provide some strange management advice, such as "Authorisation for both the purchase and the issue of stocks [British for inventory] should be confined to a few senior staff. This should avoid problems of duplication and lack of co-ordination" what? the news of a purchasing department, processes and procedures, automated systems, information technology or ERP has not reached you just yet?

So, fellow readers, if you can avoid buying this book, you should.

Well, I truely agree with the former comment.
I was foreced to use it too. I have nerver seen such a bad book: Unlocially, redudancy, worde teachign style, confusing..etc.
It reflects the professionality of teachers recommending it.
There exist a few better books I bought but they have never been recommended by the program conducters..strange.

The most important book I ever read.

I could write my own book about the love I have for The Legacy of Beezer and Boomer. Myself, a human dad to two black labradors, just like Doug; As they were getting on in age I just got a feeling that I knew I wouldn't get through their loss without some help. After stumbling on fan favorites like A Dog's Purpose, Marley & Me, etc...and having those books not fulfill what it was I was looking for, Amazon's handy "you might like" feature "suggested" I check out Beezer and Boomer. So after reading the premise, I decided to buy it.

It sat on my coffee table for a year, occasionally getting dusted. We lost one of our labs, "Justice" suddenly out of the blue and yet still, the book remained on the table waiting for me to get up the courage to read it. As time ticked on, our second labrador, "Johnny" was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and my world came crashing down with the difficult choices that brings. We made some choices in his care that had I read the book, I would have made differently. But the book gave me comfort and taught me that doing my best was good enough...I hadn't failed as I thought I might have.

Needless to say, I began reading the book part way through Johnny's journey with Osteosarcoma. There's a major event in the book and the day I read about that event...it was actually that day on the calendar. Coincidence? I don't think so. As I read on, I realized Boomer had the same condition as Johnny. Coincidence? I don't think so.

There were so many parallels and "ah ha" moments in the book and in my own life that it became clear that Doug's book found me. I went from a near breakdown on the day of Johnny's diagnosis to holding him in my arms for his last moment. And when that moment came, I was proud of me, proud of Johnny and proud of how I helped the other people in my home cope. Never would have happened without The Legacy of Beezer and Boomer.

I've given the book to many people and some make it through as changed as I did and some have to put it down and sadly choose to not finish it. My advice is you MUST power through and you will get those amazing, life changing moments, the "ah ha" moments, lots of comfort, lost of laughs and a book takes you on an emotionally epic journey. My mother in fact is reading the book now. She calls me crying, she calls me laughing, she calls me to talk about the "ah ha" moments she's having... She needs this book not just for when her pup gets older, but right now as she's caring for my grandmother. Caring for your dog or caring for your family...it's the same emotions and decision making process about selecting their care, being mentally and emotionally fatigued yourself, having day after miserable day worrying about a future death that you have no control over. Read the book. It will give you your days back and teach you how to have joy every single day in the face of something tough.

A good book if your pet is terminal

Not a book on grieving. A good book if your pet is terminal. I found "Beezer's Top Ten Reasons Not to Feel Guilty" from the beezerandboomer.com website a really good and consoling little fact sheet and I keep it handy. The book was definitely a TMI for me having just lost my Golden of 10 1/2 years. She died within three weeks of her diagnosis and I had no time to "prepare" for her death. This book made me sadder and even more guilt ridden and I can't wait to re-sell it. Mr. Kotavy tells a good story about his situation which is not everyone's situation. If you have a sick and dying pet this book is for you. If you can get through it. I couldn't. If there is a message of life for an animal lover it's be thankful you were gifted with your companion. But, life does mean eventual death. There is a special place in Heaven for all of God's creatures. He so loves them all.

As a grief counselor who also specializes in pet loss, I can say without reservation that Doug Koktavy's Legacy of Beezer and Boomer is one of the finest books I've ever read on the human-animal bond ~ and trust me, I've read a LOT of books on this subject. The author has captured what it means to truly love our animals, including the great life lessons they have to teach us about grief, transformation and finding meaning in loss. I will recommend it highly to all my clients, colleagues, family, friends and associates ~ and I'm very grateful to the author for having the courage, wisdom and insight to write it!

Never, Never Bother With Blue...

This is the second book I've read with the involvement of Candice Fox as either co-author or as sole author. And neither stories have impressed me.

Two things are immediately apparent: James Patterson had very little (anything?) to do with the plot and its setting, and alleged "co-author" Fox has never been anywhere near an Aussie uranium mine (such as Bandya) of which there are none -- and never have been any -- in Western Australia. It's like setting a mystery in the coal mines of Florida. Additionally, there's no way that a uranium mine would support the 5,000 workers that Fox imagines; more like 500, if that. And the notion of a virtual walled city, along with its prostitutes (I kid you not!), drug barons and illegal firearms industry has to be a joke surely? More tellingly, uranium mines are usually open cut, strip, or box mined; the notion of a labyrinth of underground tunnels is an absurdity, and there'd definitely be no vertical raises -- like the one Blue falls into. Another(!) glaring error is the scenario whereby a NSW state cop is sent across two state borders, to WA, in order to run an investigation that would be carried out by that state's own police. No way.

As far as the protagonist goes, well, the less said the better. Harriet Blue is a very confused and confusing character, both in her fictional traits, and the way the author(s) define her. Is she savvy or muddled; is she brave or fearful; is she confident or uncertain? Who can know. One minute she's the brash fighter and the next she's a confused mouse. Her character alters more often than I change my socks LOL.

I did mange to finish this unsatisfying book, but at its end it wasn't really worth the effort. Unless Patterson starts writing his own books again, I'm thinking his name will go onto my ignore list. (BTW, Blue is no Lindsay Boxer.)

Disappointing

As a long time Patterson fan, I looked forward to diving into this book. I finished it, but it was a chore. The characters were not well developed, and frankly not likeable. Next time i see this Patterson/Fox combo, I'll wait to check it out from the library. That way, if it's as bad as this one, no harm no foul.

Don't Bother

I'm giving this book one star because there's no option for zero. I am returning this book for a refund. I am just 30% into the book and cannot force myself to read another page. The characters are not developed and the interaction between them is shallow. The plot, while probably a good idea, isn't even close to being developed. I am cancelling all my pre-orders for James Patterson's books. This one is the second huge disappointment in a row. I won't waste my money again.

A definitive but digestible history

I had the opportunity to meet Peter Mansfield a few times when I worked in London between 1993 and 1994, a softly-spoken and dignified man who had made it his life's work to learn about and understand the Arab World and its relationship with the colonial powers.
Sadly, Mansfield has since passed away, but this book remains as a beautiful epitaph that is as close to a definitive but digestible history of the Arab people as I've read.
Recommended for those who want to understand the big picture before getting into the detail of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.

Self-Identity and Foreign Views

Mansfield presents a country-by-country survey of all the Arab peoples of the world. Mansfield is a historian and journalist bringing 30 years of field experience to this work.

His analysis helps clarify how various Islamic movements have dealt with the challenges relating to modernization, technology and the modern world political system. As part of this process, he discusses the causes and results of the 1990 Gulf War.

Note that Mansfield is focusing on Arab peoples, not all Islamic peoples of the world. However, in this process, he also includes a perspective on the relationship of the Arab countries and Islamic movements to non-Arab Islamic peoples and sects.

This able author looks at the data in different ways, providing a multi-faceted view. He provides a historical focus, which helps to understand how we got where we are. Filling in many details often missed in the somewhat abstract chronologies we expect, Mansfield includes here an analysis by country.

This brings to life the individual situations that are often ignored when the stock western political analysis refers to the "Arab World." As you read Mansfield's discussion of each country, you realize these are people like everyone else, trying to make sense of the puzzling forces and situations in which they are caught up. Real life rarely matches the simple back and white of political rhetoric and media sound bites.

Extremely insightful is a third view in which Mansfield compares self-views of the various Arab peoples and the view of them by foreigners. Readers will find this book an enriching experience.

Brilliant book

If you're looking for a compact but detailed history and description of the Arab world, it's difficult to imagine a book that can top this one. I picked it off the shelf thinking it would be just another dull chronology - but when I examined its layout, I just had to have it. It consists of three sections: a detailed and highly readable 300-page history of the Arab world; a set of brief chapters on each Arab country; and a final short section on how the Arabs are viewed by both themselves and Westerners.
The ability to pick a single country to read about individually is the aspect of the book that most stands out for me: I was really interested in reading about just five or six Arab countries, and I wasn't about to buy a book on each of them. This book solved the problem brilliantly.

Since the 2013 publication of Williams's and Srnicek's #Accelerate: Manifesto for an Accelerationist Politics, the term has been adopted to name a set of new theoretical enterprises that aim to conceptualise non-capitalist futures outside of traditional marxist critiques and regressive, decelerative or restorative solutions. #Accelerate presents a genealogy of accelerationism, tracking the impulse through 90s UK darkside cyberculture and the theory-fictions of Nick Land, Sadie Plant, Iain Grant, and anonymous units like CCRU and SWITCH, across the cultural underground of the 80s (rave, acid house, Terminator and Bladerunner) and back to its sources in delirious post-68 ferment, in texts whose searing nihilistic jouissance would later be disavowed by their authors and the marxist and academic establishment alike. On either side of this largely unexplored central sequence, the book includes texts by Marx that call attention to his own 'Prometheanism' and key works from recent years document the recent extraordinary emergence of new accelerationisms steeled against the onslaughts of neoliberal capitalist realism, and retooled for the twenty-first century. And Old book, but still useful

I first ran into this book in 1987 at my middle school library. This book is geared towards those that have good knowledge of electronics and are willing to jump into a project that involves CPU based control. The "robot" described in this book is no R2-D2, it does not beep, talk or do anything particularly smart. Rather this book outlines how to build a wheeled robot controlled by an Intel 8085 CPU, programmed by hand in binary using an array of switches that bumbles around a room on its own. Think of it as the first version off i-robots "roomba" vacuumn...except without the vac, bigger and you program it by hand. I purchased this book recently because it was the first book that I ran into as a kid that dealt in simple to understand terms about working with a CPU. Granted programming the code into memory using only toggle switches is stone age tech nowadays...it is one project that will enable you to work with a simple CPU you can build and program without needing a Oscilloscope or computer from begining to end.

Enjoyable, Informative and Entertaining

If you have an interest in robotics, and a decent knowledge of electronics, then this book is certainly worth reading. Despite its age, the information it provides is applicable today.
Heiserman tells of his own robots, specifically Rodney, who can program himself. One example given was of Heiserman handicapping Rodney, by scratching his processors and removing one of his wheels - Rodney learned to move about efficiently in a short period of time, with no assistance. Similar anecdotes are spread throughout the book.
But most importantly, the book tells the reader how they can construct a robot similar to (or exactly the same as) Rodney. Schematics, wiring diagrams and so forth fill a large portion of the book - providing a clear method for construction.
Overall, this is certainly an interesting book. Even if you don't plan to build yourself a robot, the anecdotes are both entertaining and amazing enough alone.

I owned this book as a child. I had to get it when I found a copy. A blast from the past. If the components were still available, I would build another one in a heartbeat. I learned so much from this book as a child, I still use the knowledge everyday.

Simply perfect!

I didn't find the last few collections of inspirational sayings I read very, well, inspirational, so I was a bit skeptic about Beth's books. This is different - perfect little quotes, so simple and so effective. I love this little book. I love the quotes, the look, the size (3 x 4 inches?) ... and I love what Beth Mende Conny wrote in the introduction: "In matters of love, family, friendship, and work, this collection of thoughts encourages you to take control of your life and ideas, to turn life's stumbling blocks into stepping stones. As you turn these pages, take the words of advice to heart and mind. Let them serve as loving, accepting, tell-it-to-you-straight kinds of friends ..." One of my favorites? Nice Gift for a Girl

We bought this for a grandson. It has an attached bookmark anchored by a 24-caret gold plated charm. We replaced the charm with a Marine Corps uniform button. We couldn't change the words inside which, in one case, anyway, seem to be written for a female reader. It can be made OK for a boy, but it
s better for a girl.
